How to find the right fishing pole?
So, I have recently gotten into fishing, and I would love to get a pole and reel that will handle the weight of larger fish, such as salmon. Most freshwater fish that I catch is about 2-8 lbs, mostly landlock salmon or trout. I am wondering, how do I go about measuring the weight capacity of the pole/reel, and where would be the best place to look? I am in the Seattle area if that helps. Oh, and perhaps a boat, something that stores easily. I am not ready to go all gunho about this yet, but for this season i would like to at least find something to enjoy the fishing once in a while in. THANKS!!!
There's no way you can find out how big of a fish a reel and rod can handle. With experience of owning various lengths, actions, and brands of fishing rods you get to know what you like, the same when it comes with reels, line, etc. Two to eight-pound fish are not huge fish but are definitely good sized fish, and you should easily find a reel being capable of handling those kind of fish.
Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, and Gander Mountain are three good places to chat with guys about fishing and find out a general idea on what type of line, rod, reel, etc you need.
A good spinning reel would be great for your applications, and are fairly easy to use. If you can't already use one then you can pick one up and find out the basics in a day or sometimes two. Match the spinning reel up with a 6'6" or 7' graphite spinning rod and you'll do fine.
I personally like the Pflueger President spinning reels, one of the 6740-models would work great. You can pick these up at your local Academy, Dick's Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, etc. for $59.99. Also check out eBay, and you can normally get them new for $5 or $10 cheaper. One of these reels will handle any of your landlocked salmon and trout. You may even want to step down to the 6735-model if you toss lighter lures, though.
Match it up with a 6'6" or 7' medium action ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT graphite spinning rod. Make sure the rod is 100% graphite, none of that solid fiberglass tip stuff. Berkley Lightning Rod's are fine rods for $40, and they are all graphite. You can also check out the Graphite Series rods by Bass Pro Shops along with some other house-brand rods in the $30 - $60 range. Unless you absolutely need to break the rod down and store it, go with a 1-piece rod.
Spool the reel with a limp mono. Trilene XL or Suffix Elite are great choices. 8lb or 10lb in clear.
