Displacement question regarding boat building project.?

My friend and I are planning to build a wood flat-bottom lake-type canoe. I have figured out dimensions but I can't find an equation for Water displacement vs. maximum weight. I am trying to figure out the relationship between the submerged hull and the weight within the boat. If you have an equation I can do the math. Equation should include Surface Area of the hull (or length x width or something to that effect), weight inside boat, and depth the boat will sit in the water for the given weight and area. Although I can do the math, here's the dimensions in case you want to play around with them. The Bottom flat panel is 96"x24" and at each end it has a triangle piece with a SA of 288 sq inch. Since these pieces taper upward to a point at 45 degrees, the net downward forced is reduced by half, so the total SA of the boat is 2(.5 *288) +2304=2592 in sq. Using an equation which I believe is incorrect I got 1131 lbs as a max capacity weight with 24" tall sides. Any help appreciated.

Your figures are fine - as far as they go but... you are going to drive yourself nuts figuring all that in "inches".... besides that, you are dealing in "square inches" and you need to be dealing in "cubic" inches"... so your 1131 lbs is almost exactly "half" wrong... you need to double that, as your sides are two feet tall, not one... Here is a much easier and more accurate method... it will give you your exact waterline.
(if of course, you factor in all your "add on" weights... ie: construction material, gear, your weight, accessories (motor, battery, and or fuel, etc.)

Just remember this "old boat-builders" saying:
"8 pints, 8 pounds, the world around... "
Thus, an easy way to remember the formula for what you are trying to do.
8 pints weighs 8 pounds
8 pints in a gallon = 8 pounds in a gallon
8 gallons in 1 cubic foot...
thus: 8 gallons x 8 lbs each = 64 pounds in one cubic foot.

Whala! 64 lbs... Wouldn't you know this just happens to be the weight of 1 cubic foot of seawater... (fresh water of course is slightly less - 62)

I build boats all the time... I have always used this formula to determine bouyancy... and to estimate waterline... and thus draft & freeboard.

In your case if you have a flat bottom canoe with a 2' bottom that expands a length of 8' and has 2' sides...
your canoe will indeed float 32 cubit ft of water or
32 x 64 lbs or 2,048 lbs - but your boat will be useless as it will be basically totally submerged with this much weight...

(remember) You are dealing in "cubic" feet not "square" feet. Since your boat hull is 2' high - you have 2' x 8' x 2') or 32 cubic feet inside your canoe.

So - now we know your weight capacity - so lets take all that weight out... and start over...

At a 2,048 lb. capacity with a 24" sides (2,048 divided by 24 = 85) we now know that for every 85 lbs you put in your boat - your boats hull will sink 1" into the water...

So, if your materials for building the boat weighs 85 lbs, and if you weigh (170 lbs), your canoe will ride in the water with a 3 inch draft and 21" inches of freeboard. Which is really very good.

Now... as far as the shape of your hull is concern...
When I figure bouyancy I cut my hull measurements off at the last full cubic foot... I don't even attempt to calculate the last 1 or 2 feet where the bow shape narrows from less than one foot wide to the bows point... trying to figure this is not worth your effort, and usually has a nuetral affect anyway...

So, there you have it... it is really that simple...

Displacement Hull?

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPP with boat test?!?!?!/?

Which of the following statements about PWCs is true?

a. PWCs are considered outboards since they are controlled by a tiller.
b. PWCs have a displacement hull to cut through the water with very little propulsion.
c. The U.S. Coast Guard includes PWCs in the group of stern drive vessels less than 16 feet in length.
d. PWCs are subject to all of the same laws of any other vessel plus a few laws specific to PWCs.

d. is the correct answer. here is a quote from the "handbook of Wisc. boating laws" page 22

"PWC operators must obey the laws that apply to other vessels as well as obey additional requirements that apply specifically to the operation of personal watercraft"

hope this helps
