How to install a bathtub (complete with system) in a sailboat?
So, I am thinking about living on a boat in a few years, and my girlfriend wants to as well, but only if there is a bathtub. We are looking at a 35 - 45 foot sailboat, and since I have yet to see a boat that size with an actual bathtub, I was wondering if A) there were any out there, and B), if not, would it be possible to re-model and install one myself (side note, I am studying naval architecture, so designing it wouldn't be a problem, but since I am only a second year student, I am not sure how yet.) Also, I am not asking as to whether this is a 'good idea', or if it is 'practical' - just asking if it is possible, and how.
This is mostly just for fun right now, but it could be a serious project in the near-to -semi-distant future.

One rarely sees anything resembling a bathtub on sailboats that size. One runs into a few problems. First, filling a traditonally sized hot tub would use a huge percnet of the water usually carried on a boat that size. Secondly on runs into issues with weight - both in terms of supporting it and weight distribution on the boat, since heads (bathrooms) are seldom near the center line.
I've seen a couple mini tub ideas. One is an idea I heard from a famous cruising couple named the Pardeys. They lived aboard full time and had a small pull out tub much like the small brass tubs one sees in some of the western movies. They simply poured in heated water.
Many boats also have a shallow "tub" in the head combined with a shower. Usually this takes the shape of a tubbed portion of the head with a shower handle available. One just steps over a lip, much like a traditional tub, but usually these are not as high, and are meant as much to sit down and shower in as to really soak. Usually, below these is located a sump that has a pump such as a bilge pump that pumps the water overboard when it enters the drain.
With basic epoxy layoup skills, one could probalby modify many existing heads to work. What will probably be equally as problematic is figuring out the water supply.
I read of another couple that would ocassioanlly treat themsleves to "a bath" when out cruising by using their cockpit. They glassed in the bottom part of the companionway hatch, so the cockpit could hold 8 inches of water and they could divert much of the water from large rainstorms into the cockpit and then let the sun heat it up a bit. Washed clothes in it as well.
