deck boats for sale
whats the best kayak to start with?
i am looking at day touring/fishing. mostly on lochs but sometimes on the sea when its calm.
im currently looking at the old town vapor, the perception sundance and the dagger fiesta.
i am 6ft1 and have a bit of experience in various types of kayaking, i do not like sit on tops, my budget is abround £400. looking for a short boat as its easier to store and lift myself
I realize you want a short boat for storage ease but that is NOT the best style of boat for the use you are describing. Those short wide recreational boats you are looking at are notoriously hard to handle in wind and waves, both of which you will be encountering on lochs and coastal areas in the UK. They also have dangerously large cockpits which will make them more prone to swamping and harder to seal with a sprayskirt. A poor choice for open water. None of those models will track straight without a lot of effort and corrective strokes and all are quite slow. And none can have a rudder added, which is something you may find you need if you venture offshore or run into windy conditions.
Honestly, for your size and usage you should be looking at kayaks minimum 12' but more like 14' to 16' or even longer with a standard keyhole cockpit and sealed bulkheads. These will give you more buoyancy while still being long enough and narrow enough to track well and resist windcocking. It is possible to get a reasonable weight with a longer boat because they tend to be a bit narrower. The Venture Easky 15 by P & H (made in the UK) is 50 lbs, only 2 lbs more than the Sundance and it is a great kayak in wind and waves, both stable enough for a beginner but with good enough performance for any intermediate level paddler. Plus you can get it with the rudder or add one later (all the rigging points are already molded in with the hardware for control cables.) It has two good hatches, bulkheads, perimeter rigging (for self-ressue) and excellent thigh hooks (which help control the boat and brace you in the cockpit) I have the low volume version of this same kayak (i am only 5'5") and it is one of my favorites for all conditions. I think if you tried it on the water compared to any of the three boats you are looking at, you would be amazed at the difference in performance and quality. The Easky's are not that pricey -- I got mine on sale (in the US) last summer for the equivalent of £430.
If you can't find one like that within your budget usually recommend new boaters try to start with a used kayak -- you can get a better boat what you spend and not take much of a loss if you decide after using it that you need to upgrade and go to sell it.
If you have limited storage space and want lightness, you might want to consider a folding kayak. They are considerably lighter than comparably sized hardshell boats and can be broken down into a duffel bag to carry in the car boot or store in a closet. Though most good ones are above your budget, you might be able to find a used Folbot or Klepper or look at the Pakboat Puffin and Sport lines of hybrid folder/inflatables. http://www.pakboats.com
We also have a Pakboat kayak (one of the larger 15' XT models) and they are very seaworthy boats. One nice feature of them is they can be paddled open like a canoe or closed like a kayak with the removable deck. And a couple of models can be converted from single to tandem.
