deck boats for sale
kayak suggestions for smaller frame?
I'm a 5' 10" guy and weigh about 150 pounds. I've been searching for a kayak in the higher end recreational to light touring neighborhood (> 10 feet) for mostly flat water day trips in larger ponds, lakes and rivers. Prefer something not too wide like some of the general recreational kayaks but still has good stability and tracking. An adjustable padded seat and sealed bulkhead are pluses. Any suggestions on something that might 'fit' the bill? Many thanks in advance!
PS: been looking at the Emotion Advante Edge.
The AdvantEdge lacks a front hatch and deck rigging and at 28" wide will be a real slug in the water, balky and slow. It's really a rec boat, lamely disguised as a quasi-touring kayak.
See if you can find an outfitter in your area that stocks the Venture Easky 15LV. I'm slightly shorter than you but the same weight and have one. Actually I have several boats (the Easky is my 7th kayak) even some very high end ones up to 18' yet this is the one I grab most often. The Easky is made by P & H, who make high-performance kayaks costing thousands of dollars, but this Venture line of there's is very reasonable -- the list price on the 15LV (the LV stands for "low volume" which someone of your weight needs -- you are too light for the standard Easky 15) is around $1000 but I got mine at an end of season sale for 30% off (just over $700). Yeah, that's a couple of hundred more than the Emotion, but it is more than twice the boat. And it will have a much higher resale value if you decide you want something more later on
Despite being 15' long the Easky only weighs 46 pounds (less than the Emotion), has adjustable foot pegs and thigh hooks (these add control), two good sized sealed hatches, a super comfortable seat with adjustable back and nice fittings, including an embedded metal bar that allows you to lock it up with a cable. Mine does not have a rudder but has all the hardware openings to easily add one if I ever want to. It is just over 22" wide but has more stability than other kayaks that narrow. You might feel at first like it is a little "wiggly" but that feeling goes away quickly once you discover you can lean it waaaay over and it won't roll -- in fact, you can have the cockpit coaming at the water line and it will still come right back up. I find it very stable. It tracks well, accelerates nicely, handles rough water and boat wakes easily and is a blast in fast streams too. I have used it in Class 1 whitewater and on long straight river and lake paddles. It is a fun kayak and you will not outgrow it. It also looks sharp in the water -- people always admire it when I am out paddling and are surprised when i tell them the price. You will enjoy it much more than any 10' or 12' kayak for the type of paddling you are describing.
I think it is one of the best kayaks around in "bang for your buck." A very similar kayak that is not being made anymore but which you occasionally find for sale used on Craigslist is the Aquaterra Scimitar. I found one of those for my boyfriend this year for $325.
