P4P, one of my in-laws in the yacht building trade. Boat sales are down (have been going down for years actualy) becuz the middle & upper middle classes have had to cut back. If a very wealthy person wants a yacht, or an expensive bottle of wine, or a hummer, they'll buy it whether or not it has a few bucks extra tax slapped on it. The place where I work is patronized by wealthy people. Still, I wasn't only referring to luxury taxes. Calif is riddled with mismanagement, waste, & corruption…and of course, as you mentioned, the illegals cost a ton of dough. They get all kinds of govt assistance. My husband & I have never gotten a dimes worth of assistance from any govt entity for our handicapped son's physical therapy however. Some years ago I applied for assistance for him & had the following results: from the State of Calif: my son was certainly handicapped enough, but my husband made too much money (he works for a school district!!!); and from our county: we don't have too much income, but our son is not handicapped enough! Seriously, my kid falls right through the cracks of our system & we work like dogs to give him the best care and education we can give him, but of course people like the octonut get whatever they want. Our govt is really sick.
I think that the notion you bring up Bri about progress being detrimental to our species' likelihood of survival is an extremely interesting and sharp point. Continuing with that, we might think about what progress actually means. Well, one of the biggest areas of progress is keeping people alive through medicine and food production. We've made so much progress in fact that we just have a shit tonne too many people for this planet. This population growth is another essentially uncontrollable doomsday inevitability that's again inextricably entwined with the planet and mankind like the others you mention.
People can talk all day about shutting off your lights, switching from the bad plastic cups to the good plastic cups, and the actual dirtiness of clean coal, but at the end of the day you can't carbon equate for the 3-4 billion more people we might have in 100 years or less. Which reminds me that some scientist should calculate the carbon footprint of saving the life of a dying kid in the 3rd world. When plotted over time, that footprint should rapidly expand geometrically when that kid has kids who each want to eat something. Wow, a hippie civil war between environment-savers and people-savers would be sweet. My bet is that such a war's resolution would come from some sort of unconditional subsidized carbon credit and tax scheme signed on the deck of the boat from the Whale Wars show.
I think you're absolutely right Bri when you speak about the overwhelmingness of it all and our lack of control. But from having studied nuclear weapons for my college career, I think there is a lesson that can be applied to the situation here: You just gotta stop worrying and learn to love the bomb.
