Good places to buy a used kayak?
I just want a solid kayak for a low price that I can use on calm waters. Craigslist can be kinda sketchy and thier prices aren't that great either. Is there a website or a certain store I should look at? I live near syracuse ny .
Craigslist is almost always the best place to find a good deal on a decent kayak. I have been buying and selling them for years through CL. You just have to be patient and know exactly what you are looking for. Also check with local outfitters near you (not the Big Box sporting good stores but the smaller indepenedents that specialize in water sports and outdoor gear). This time of year they often have sales on stock boats including factory demos they have used and rental boats. It is usually better for them tax-wise to get the boats out of inventory by the end of the year or they have to pay taxes on them. In fact you have a huge outfitter not far from you, Oak Orchard:

They currently have used Current Designs Kestrel 120's for $599, which is a fantastic price for an excellent light touring boat. Also some used Perception Prodigy's fro $399. They will be able to outfit you with good quality paddles and other accessories too.
Also, you can usually haggle with people selling boats on CL, especially if you watch the ads and see that an ad has been posted for a long time with no sale. If you do see a new ad with a good price, arrange to look at the boat immediately because deals do not last.
The paddlers free web forum, http://www.paddling.net has a classified ad section where you can find boats in your area, but a lot of these will be higher end than what you appear to be looking for.
If you can't find something you want used or in the outfitter stocks, there are a couple of Big Box options that are decent/ The Perception Sport Conduit 13 that Dic ks Sporting goods sells has the minimal performance and safety features you need in a kayak for a reasonable price. It has sealed front and rear bulkheads (a necessity in ALL kayaks unless you install inflatable flotation bags), deck lines for self rescue and a reasonably sized cockput you can put a spray skirt on. Don't kid yourself that "calm waters" will always be that way. Sudden storms can come up any time, any where, and you should make sure you have a boat that is safe if the waves and wind pick up. Short wide boats may seem stable on flat water but they become more vulnerable to capsizing and are harder to handle of the water gets rough. They are also boring and slow to paddle.
I've often bough used touring kayaks in excellent condition, including a paddle and sprayskirt, for $400 or less (boats that would have been $1000 to $1500 when new. Well cared for older boats can be a great deal. Keep you eye out on Craigslist. You can cross check models you see for sale against the manufacturer information on Paddling.net which also has a section with user reviews of hundreds of models of kayaks. Just bear in mind that newbies tend to rate their first boat a "10 out of 10" although they have nothing to compare it with. Cheap kayaks tend to paddle cheaply and don't allow much speed, performance or skill development. For the same price as a cheapo from a big box store you can usually find a quality used boat if you are patient enough, one that will be much more fun to kayak with.
