custom sailboats
Can I cut out the section in my cabin underneath my bow on my 30ft Catalina sailboat?
I'm wanting to install a custom shower but i need to know if i can cutout the small sofa section safely to make room for the enclosure and standing room. Thanks in advance!
Cutting any panel requires full boxing to restore any lost strength - quite do-able but must be done right by someone who knows what they are doing. Structural members are cut only after plenty of planning and with full knowledge of potential consequences. The bow section of most boats is subject to the highest stress loadings and little is put there cosmetically - in some cases I have seen there is not enough bracing full stop to keep the weight down - the Sydney 32 is a good case in point with frightening levels of hull flex forward when driven hard to windward - even tube bracing would be good!
Without an opinion from the original builder or a qualified shipwright or marine architect you should be very careful.

Advice on cakes?
OK my son's 1st birthday is less than a month from now and I intend to make this special by personally making a cake for him. I dont want a regular sheet cake so being inspired by the show Ace of Cakes. I am serving 25-40 people. I decided to make a custom Sailboat cake. I plan to use fondant and do 2 layers. What i want to know is does anyone have any tips for the cake making.
I have used fondant before but it has been some time and I always make things from scratch.
I have used this fondant on just about every cake I make, because it actualy tastes great and is easy to work with. Just to let you know if you live in a hummid area it will be harder to use fondant or make cakes for that matter. I live in Texas and I have little problem with this one.
Marshmallow fondant
1 cup mini marshmallows
1 tbsp water
1 1/2- 1 3/4 cup powder sugar
Place marshmallows in a standard 1 cup measuring cup and push down and pack them in. Place in a microwave safe bowl and add the water. Put in the microwave for about 20 seconds. Just long enough for them to soften and puff up. Take out and stir with a spoon until it is combined well. At this point it looks kind of soupy. Then add the sugar and mix and fold until all is incorporated and it is no longer sticky. I take it out of the bowl when it gets to the point where most of the sugar is incorporated and I knead it in my hands. This takes roughly about 5-7 minutes. Take a fondant roller or a regular rolling pin and roll out just as you would Wilton's fondant. You can get this fondant almost paper thin and it also repairs well. It's cheap, easy to work with, and tastes great too.
You can make a large batch of this fondant as well by doing this:
Large batch of Marshmallow fondant
1- 16 oz bag of mini marshmallows
2 tbsps water
2 lbs powdered sugar (8 cups)
Do the same procedure as above.

To anyone interested, I should be able to help answer any questions you may have regarding ANY Durbeck built. I was employed with Durbeck's for over 14 years until Win Durbeck retired the company.
I started 1973 with hull # 2 of the 46 ketch to the last 46 #27 (cutter rig). I was Vice President when the company was retired.
A some of the boats were built as “kit” boats for owner completion. As a result some were incredible example of workmanship while some of the owner completions regretably were less than desirable & below the standard established. Regardless, there are few cruising sailboats with the sailing attributes & stuctural integrity of these vessels. A number of them have sailed around the world.
We also built the Durbeck 50 ketch, a number of “one off” custom sailboats, (25,38,45,52,& 64') a Newick cruising Catamaran as well as true displacement trawlers
The Vancouver 36 was tooled & first two production models built. Tooling for other manufactures was another part of companys entrprises such as the Tarten 41, Tarten 37, CSY deck tooling, Black Fin Yacht & the Starwind sailboats (Wellcraft).
One of the last projects was the Donzi 65 Sportfish tooling & prototype production.
