Custom Power Boat
How long is a journey from Florida to Andros Island on a boat?
Kind of a large boat, but not superyacht size.
I am happy to answer your question, as I heading to White Cay from Bimini to meet my son, this very morning. But you do not mention if your boat is a sailboat or a power boat or how fast it is. You also don't mention where in Florida you are departing from.
So, at any rate. . .
The distance from either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami is about 50 nm to Bimini - and another 60 nm to Andros Island.
Bimini and S. Bimini is the closest to the mainland being only 48 nm east of Miami. Cat Cay is 8 miles South of S. Bimini and also has a customs check in, as does Bimini.
We usually cross the stream from Ft Lauderdale on a 120 ° heading to Bimini, clear customs at Browns Marina, and stay the night (or two, or three) and then head around North Rock to Mackey shoal at Morgans Bluff, Andros.
To get to Bimini: 25º 42.60 N 79º 18.50 W. Load this GPS coordinate and make heading for the Bimini channel entrance. It is approximately 50 miles due east of South Florida, depending on your port of departure. The depth of the channel entrance is about 10 feet coming into the Alice Town harbor. (about 10 to 11 hours sailing time)
So, all total you have about 110 nm from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami to Andros. Depending on the boat... sail or power and how fast it is... you can make it in 2 & 1/2 hours or 2 & 1/2 days. But most recreational boaters will head to Bimini and make that day one. Spend the night, and then head out to Andros and make it on day two.
What you should know:
Ports of Entry - Bimini: Government dock at Brown’s Marina, Sea Crest Marina, Bimini Big Game Club, Bimini Blue Water
Marina.
Ports of Entry - Andros: Government docks at Congo Town, Fresh Creek, San Andros.
Everyone on board now needs Passports. Birth certificates will no longer work, and you will be turned around.
There is now a $100 fee for up to 4 persons in a boat, $15 each additional person, $10 for each additional pet.
From Bimini, set your GPS to 24º 45.0' N. Lon. 77º 46.0' W. This will get you to Andros Lighthouse Yacht Club & Marina on Andros Island. (Since you have no Gulf Stream to hassle you, this is only about 6 to 8 hours sailing time.) Slip rates $1.30 a foot, about $20 a day for hook up to electric and $10 a day for hook up to fresh water, they have 30 plus slips, fresh water, ice & showers, diesel, gas, laundry, cable TV, Bar & Restaurant and Dive Shop - but not much else in regards to groceries or supplies. They (as most do) monitor channel 16 on your VHF.
