Custom Power Boat
Private Cruise, New York to St. Thomas?
So me and two friends got a hold of a 22 foot sailboat and have been fixing it up for the past year, we're looking to take a long cruise by ourselves from New York City (ish) to St. Thomas, USVI.
Can anybody point us in the right direction as far as plotting a course, getting temporary mooring in St. Thomas for one week, and what to do about customs?
also, how long do you think that trip should take to get down there? the captain says it might take a week and a half to get down there and a few days to get back, but with such a small boat powered only by wind i dont know if its going to take up to two and a half weeks or what have you.
and yes, this is actually happening, we've been planning this for over a year now, and its time to get the ball seriously rolling on this project. anything you can throw in for information would be greatly appreciated, thanks
AJ, thats not possible, considering that the trip is over 1500 miles one way.
There is no issue about customs since St. Thomas is in the US Virgin Islands. There might be issues if you stop at other islands which are not US territory.
As to all the other questions, the captain should be able to handle all of that -- assuming by "captain" you are referring to a professional mariner with proper certifications that you have engaged!

Clique sums it up. I was never cool, nor never will be. For nautical info, I've found Soundings (even though it's targeted to power boat users) more informative.
The Bush administration wanted to put a LNG processing facility in the middle of the Sound. Luckily I think that's been nixed. In the meantime, the town here has been fighting a developer who wants to develop one of the last remaining undeveloped patches of the coastline here (albeit it's on a tidal river).
