How long time does it take before anyone can visit a place where a nuclear bomb has exploded?
I hope to be cruising with my sailboat soon and hopefully I can visit the pacific on my way around. My worry is that I see many islands have been nuclear testing grounds in the past. So do I need a geiger counter or is it safe to visit these places? How long after a nuclear test is safe?
your question relates to dispersion of the radioactive elements involved.
dfferent geographical regions will contain radiation in varied manners.
waterborne areas are probably safer to visit sooner while deserts may contain radioactive soil longer.
the half life of uranium is roughly 5000 years before it is reduced to 50% of its inital strength.
it is safe to assume that rocks in the that contain sizable amounts of radioactivity will probably not fall to safe levels for thousands of years if your were come in contact with them in these regions.
materials other than rocks ( sand and organics ) would probably decompose and get blown or soaked away.
no amount of radiation is considered safe and the less the better.
a visit to these places should be brief no matter how far in the future one goes.
dont let anyone tell you it is safe since a chance encounter with "hot rock" can induce a fatal cancer in anyone.
remember, the half life of uranium is 5000 years.

17 year old trying to get on recruited on a crew
Hi, I'm a 17 year old guy looking to get a job on a crew, as deckmen. I've completed my classes on CL boats when I was younger and I should start my classes on 22-24 foot sailboats next month. Would it be possible to start cruising around the world at my age ? If I complete all the courses at my local marina, and get my CYA basic cruising certification license, is that a good thing that employers look for, when they recruit ? And how would I be able to find a local agency ? I live in Montreal.
Since youre still underaged you will at minimum have to get a full ok from your parents or other adult in charge of you (cant find the right word). And I may say that most companys will find you a bit youth espeacially for a tough deck job. Also be sure to check out both the rules in your homeland as well as the rules were youre going to work in. If youre reciving nos due to your age try to find other educations that will give better job opertunites in the future like a seamen school (officer (or simular) school). Johan
