how to cross the atlantic in personal motor boat
I'm looking to but a yacht that can cross the ocean..?
Without a sails, what nautical range and fuel capacity is required to make such a trip possible aboard a motored yacht..?
First off, with a power driven vessel of any kind (and certainly single engine long-distance trawlers are the most economical) What you will discover, is that it is no longer a case of "mph" or "knots". . . truthfully, it is "dollars per hour".
Fact is, in most cases, even if I gave you the most comfortable and most economic trawler made today for free. . . most could not afford the fuel to make an ocean passage.
Boats have a "fuel burn rate" that is measured in "gallons per hour" NOT miles per gallon. The main reason for this is because most "ocean capable" power vessels will not go 1 mile on 1 gallon of fuel.
Dear friends of mine had purchased a new 44' Kadey-Krogen a few years ago. From Bermuda to the Azores, (the shortest landfall distance between fuel stops across the southern Atlantic) they "had" to maintain a speed of less then 7 knots (about 8 mph) to make this distance on 850 gallons of fuel. My son and I crossing along with them in our 40 Rassy (sailboat) in fact had to reduce sail, to keep them in sight - they were so much slower then us. In addition, when we reached the Azores, they had to fill up at a cost of another $3,000. By the time we reached Morocco, (Casablanca) their voyage from New Jersey to Bermuda, to the Azores, to Morocco, had already cost them over $15,000 in fuel. And their Kadey 44' single engine trawler was as economical as any I have every heard of. Our fuel cost sailing in the Rassy? Well, we had used about 2 gallons out of our 75 gallon tank for putting around and docking at Marinas.
So, while the Kadey 44' may not be a "yacht" as you in-vision, it for sure is one of the very most economical, smallest, and more affordable ocean passage makers money can buy. So to answer your question, I don't think you will find one much smaller or more economical that can do it then this.
The "myth" over recreational, personal live aboard size power vessels crossing oceans is speed. Truth is, in order for them to made the distance on a single set of full fuel tanks - their speed is typically no faster, (if not indeed slower) then most sailboats. If they go faster, they simply won't make it between fuel stops.
So, check out the link below... there, you will discover how you can live on and sail around the world for a year or two, cheaper then you can cross the Atlantic in a power "yacht". Even if the vessel itself, it fully paid for.
