looking for advice on dry rot repair?
I have an older crestliner tri-hul and I have a dry-rot issue in the transom, along with reinforcing it inside and outside of the gunwhale, I heard you could drill some downward holes in the top of the transom and inject an epoxy into it and it will harden better than new. Can anybody advise me on this procedure and where I can find this epoxy at, or even if it works at all.. any and all advice will be welcome.
Dry rot is a fungus. Wet rot is similar - just more slimy. The only way of repairing rot in such a critical area is to remove all rotted timber, grind back all water damaged sections and scarfe in new timber, and laminate any GRP required using Epoxy resin. Drilling holes and pouring epoxy in will have a minimal effect if you don't use some primary techniques, section five point three of the attached link covers the basics - thinned epoxy is just a very weak epoxy, no good in structural repair. http://www.westsystem.com/ss/assets/HowTo-Publications/Fiberglass-Boat-Repair-and-Maintenance.pdf
This is a critical area of any boat with an outboard - no cheap fix is safe, or ultimately cost effective if the transom fails and you lose the engine and maybe worse. You cannot short cut this.
