What to do in Haute Normandie?
Some of my friends want to go to France for a vacation. One of my friends really wants to visit Haute Normandie. Does anyone know about the major cities there or attractions like art museums? What kind of transportation works best to get around? What kind of food is there that is particular to the region? What types of art and other crafts from this region are there that would make good souvenirs or gifts for family? What kind of music do they have? Any concerts coming there this summer maybe? And if anyone knows about the history of this place that would be great 
Haute Normandie is one of the areas with the greatest amounts of culture in France. In fact it has the highest number of museums in the whole of France. It also is a very picturesque region as it enjoys a spectacular coast with amazing cliffs, especially at Etretat, and the inter-land is green and very pretty. The light there is very special and it was the haunt of Impressionist painters. There are many picturesque villages with old cottages some of them thatched , with the tradition of irises growing on the crest of the roof. It has major towns such as Caen with its two abbeys,or Rouen where you could spend several days as there are so many medieval things still standing, so much to see, gracefull gothic churches, many museums,and where there are classical concerts etc...The town has many real antique shops. The Rouen pottery with its hand decoration is stunning and makes a good and unusual present. There are many castles of all periods to be visited in the region, some with exhibitions of local costumes and art work, some with stunning antiques. There also are medieval keeps. You must also have heard of the Bayeux tapestry which is one of the world wonders.
The ports of Dieppe (castle and museum) and Honfleur are very popular, and Honfleur in particular has attracted many artists as it is very special.
If you are interested in art and painting you will find Monet's house and gardens at Giverny which are absolutely spectacular, and where he painted the famous water lilies series. In the same village there also is a wonderful museum of American Art. It is the area where the river Seine is at its most stately and impressive, and the picturesque little town of les Andelys on its bank, towered over by the old castle, is extremely picturesque too.
It is an area rich in History, invaded by the Vikings, then much fought for between France and England, and from where the William the Conqueror left to the English coast prior to the battle of Hastings. Rouen is the place where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake. In much nearer times you have the famous Normandy beaches where the joint forces of America, the UK and France landed and which led to the end of WW2. There are still pontoons to be seen at Arromanches and fairly close to the beaches there is the superb American cemetery with its white marble tombstones, and the equally moving German cemetery where one realises that some of the soldiers pressed into that war were kids barely sixteen years old.
The area is famous for its dairy products, its cheeses and butter in particular, and the local food is delicious: tender beef or lamb, duck and poultry, black pudding, good vegetables and, on the coast, seafoods and shellfish fresh from the local waters.
Due to the numerous orchards and varieties of apples cultivated there, the Normandy cider is exceptional, and the Calvados brandy distilled from apples is famous throughout France. Bénédictine, an herbal liqueur made from 27 different plants and spices, created by a Benedictine Monk at Fécamp in the 1500's is still made in the same location today and the exact recipe is a well-guarded secret. You can buy miniature bottles at the abbey which also make good presents.
However to appreciate fully all Higher Normandy has to offer you really need to hire a car as transportation to the more isolated places is scarce and makes exploration difficult.
