Boat ownership costs?

Is there a rule of thumb to predict the cost of owning a boat, given its cost (or even its length, etc). Cost meaning fuel, registration, maintenance, docking, etc. Larger boats, too (i.e. $50,000+)

There is a phrase called a yacht unit which is $1000. This refers to costs for repairs or anything for boats. Registration varies per state but you can save by getting the boat documented. If you have a loan this is required. Some states have a luxury tax on the value of the boat. In many states you will have winter storage which can be as much as in the water costs. There are launching fees or tailer costs. $50,000 is not alot for a boat these days. As a transient we have seen docking fees of $1 to $5 a foot per night.Insurance? and fuel costs are going up..

The Essentials of Living Aboard a Boat - Part 5 - Boating Costs

What kind of boat do I need to commute economically on the water?

I live on the Otago Harbour in southern New Zealand and want to find a way of commuting to work on the water which won't break the bank.
It's 8 miles each way across the water, or 16 by road and car (slow, tedious, dangerous trip with a high chance of head-on collisions or skidding into the bay, a nightmare I am trying to escape).
I'd be happy with any water vehicle capable of doing this trip within one hour, and at very modest cost.
I am able to build just about anything I want with my own hands, I just need to know what would be best.
Any ideas?

Any standard motorboat would be better than taking a car. But if you think also ecological, rather a sailing boat or a solar driven motorboat should be your choice. What do you think about this article (from http://www.3sat.de/nano/ - search for "Atlantik" and "Solar" for the complete article, sorry that there's no direct link available):

After one of your latest questions I suppose kayaking will not be your first choice - rowing would not be much better. Sailing directly against the wind is impossible - a catamaran is faster but can't sail as cose to the wind as a monohull is able to. Anyway I'd think about either a solar driven motor boat or a small catamaran. Maybe have a look at he website of a polynesian style catamaran builder (also selling plans for self construction):

You're the one with the problem. You're being paid to do a job, which is to answer stupid questions. What would it hurt you to be polite?

As for the U-Boat question, haven't you ever heard of a replica?
