cobia fishing boat
fishing cobia?
I have heard all the rage in my part of SC is cobia fishing. I do go fishing in a boat but while pier fishing 20 feet above the water how are you to land a large fish. Also what do you suggest for gear bait. I have been bottom fishing with a Carolina style rig and all so far is black tips.
Cobia are very strange when it comes to baits. Some days they will nail anything, other days they will swim right by it. In my opinion, the best is a live eel, a lot of tackle shops have them. Also, a live pinfish. Or, a chartruese (light green) feather or bucktail jig 1oz or more. Try having one rod ready to cast while fishing other rods. Many times you'll be able to spot them swimming at the surface and you'll have a rod ready to cast at him. You need medium-heavy rods spooled w/ atleast 150-200 yards of 20+ lb. test. (Cobia are very strong). Also, try using a bobber or balloon instead of the Carolina rig as Cobia are usually near the surface. Also, wear polarized sunglasses so you'll be able to see them under the surface, they look a lot like sharks...Good luck with the pier netting situation. I see Cobia steaks in your future!!
