what do you need to buy a boat and where can i find a cheap one in fl?
As Richard mentioned, you need money to buy it, and ID and more money to register it. As far as "cheap" boat in Florida go. . . "They're everywhere! They're everywhere!"
My suggestion to find the very best boats at the very best deals - requires the most time and effort on your part. I would head to the East coast (stay on the ICW waterway - not the beach) and head north from about Cocoa Beach. . . Stop and check out all the Marinas, I stayed over in Titusville this year for several months to take care of personal stuff - and witnessed some unbelieveable "steals of deals" - I almost bought a 36' Trawler, but as I was checking it out, a kid returned that just bought it for $5,000. Under "normal" circumstances this vessel would have sold for $50,000.
I also witnessed one man give away a 36' sailboat, and another great (in the water, ready to go) 33' sailboat go for only $1,800. Three others for were sale for back due Marina fees (all at a cost of about 1/10 the value of the boat). And one night on TV, I watched as Bevard Co Officials announced they had just rounded up 18 abandoned vessels at anchor near Port Canaveral.
Since you don't mention what kind or size boat you are looking for - it's hard to judge - but for sure, if it is a boat too large to trailer, you will find the very best deals by doing lots of leg work - While I know their are exceptions, I have found most "cheap" Craiglist boats to be junk or "sucker boats" (where you're the sucker).
What you will find (real quick) is that most "Broker" boats - while they are great boats - will not be cheap at all, as most Brokers will not take a boat they can't make a heafty commission on.
