cheap powerboats
I'm thinking of buying a powerboat. Is now a good time?
I live in the midwest and a 2001 27' express cruiser I was looking at in May is now $10,000 cheaper. It needs work and will be another year older by the time I get to use it. Does it make better sense to wait until next year and buy a better maintained boat (thus avoiding winter storage fees and the renovation costs)? This boat has no obvious mechanical problems (survey has not been done yet) and low hours but is a bank repo. It has several cosmetic issues that will require about $5,000 to correct. How much value does a boat lose between seasons 8 and 9? This is our first boat purchase although I grew up on my parent's boats.
Once you get to season 8 or 9, a boat's value is totally dependent on it's condition (and of course general market conditions). I mean it's not really losing money because of age at this point.
$10,000 seems a lot for seasonal variation, I wonder what percent of its value is that? Probably overpriced in May, and the economy might've had something to do with it.
Cosmetics -- I like to think of that as an opportunity for customization: paint, upholstery, hardware, accessories yada yada yada, but then I'm a DIY kinda guy and working on the boat is just part of the whole ownership experience for me. Not everyone is into that.
You say "midwest" -- I guess you're looking at another couple months before it goes into storage? I wouldn't like that very much unless I was keeping it in the garage & working on it over the winter.........

Whenever I buy someone a gift I get something I want them to appreciate and love. And if that means for them to return it then they'll have to do it. I'd rather them have something they really love.
Yes it hurts my feelings but in the end it would bother me more if I spent all this money and they're not using it.
Your girlfriend needs to get over it!
It's entirely possible that your fiancee was very excited to get something she thought was nicer than what you had, even if she didn't realize that it didn't have the necessary hookups. And was very, very disappointed that (1) it couldn't be integrated into your "high tech" set up and (2) that you wanted to return it and quite probably weren't nearly as tactful expressing its unsuitability as you think you were. How many gifts that she's given you have you returned or not used anyway? That could have compounded her hurt and reiterated her sense that nothing she gets you is good enough.
Control freak? Possibly. Many women who've experienced upheavals in their lives that they had no control over tend to wind up control freaks. Not necessarily a power issue, with regard to how much power they can hold over another person, but how much control they can have over their own situation and surroundings, whatever they are.
Just my own 2 cents, however little they are worth.
