cheap pontoon boats
cheapest way to power a "boat"?
just got an old couch, and i plan on using a couple of pontoons made from flotation foam and a frame made of 2x4's to keep it floating, but i'm not sure how to power it. (speed is pretty critical here) any suggestions?
Get yourself a 12V deepcycle battery (around $40) and a 34lb thrust trolling motor ($110) from walmart. You'll need a battery charger, too.
Might be able to get cheaper stuff off ebay, but after shipping costs it'd probably be a wash.
Any faster, wouldn't be safe. Your craft is going to have very poor hydrodynamics anyway, that would limit your speed no matter how much power you put on it.

advise on which boat to go for?
i want to start up a booze cruise on the ocean and need a boat not too big and not too small for about 10 to 20 people, I also need outside and inside space for various weather. I have no idea about which style to go for. I like the house boat pontoons style but have been told they are no good in the bad weather and can turn over easily OK for lakes but not ocean, I also want it to be as cheap as possible so any ideas and input would be appreciated

You need a sea-going yacht-type boat, probably around 45' at the least. A used one will need to be renovated and remodeled.
As cheap as possible will be around $100,000, plus insurance and licenses and a licensed captain. Add in support and staff and booze and what-not, you will probably need $250,000 minimum to get this going.

On the one hand, the advertisers are responsible. It's easy to sell loud go-fast excitement, or gross luxury, not only because they are superficially appealing, but because an image can be sold along with the product. A person buys an 'exciting' boat not only to have it, but to be exciting himself, because the marketing deliberately creates that association.
From the consumer's side, besides falling prey to marketing strategies, car culture reigns supreme. It's unfortunate, but not really surprising, that the most popular boats would be loud, fast, and drivable like cars, instead of slow, quiet, and requiring some specialized skills to use.

How to Buy Used Pontoon Boats
There are lots of marinas in the Lake area. Many of them have a variety of boats for rent. You'll just have to shop around and find the one you want at the price you want. Enjoy Party Cove!
