I want a cheap boat
how can i buy a cheap boat in england for 3 months use?
i would like to cruise the canals this winter.
but it looks like i cannot get a license
because i am not a u.k. citizen
i have visited the direct.gov.uk sight ,
and for part III registration it states that i must be resident of UK 185 days of the year AND a British,EU,or Commonwealth citizen .fullstop.
The 3 or 6 month licence would be nice , but i sure would like to see the written details on-line at a .gov sight !
You can hire a canal boat, irrespective of your Nationality, from hire people, all over the Country, but it's an expensive proposition, since boats are expensive to buy, moor and maintain.
Bear in mind, also, that there are many canal closures while British Waterways carry out repairs during the Winter months up till the beginning of March, mostly. They do issue an annual list of proposed closures which is helpful. The Broads are less likely to be closed due to man-made interference although ice can be a big problem there - my boat was once frozen-in, in Norfolk, as it has been on the Trent & Mersey for that matter.
Just a thought - I have an "International Certificate of Competence" issued by our Royal Yachting Association, so that should I want to take my narrow boat across to France for part of the year, I am exempt from much of the Red Tape associated with prolonged waterway cruising across the Channel. Anything similar in your neck of the woods (or waters!)?
I've not gone into it, but I've found a web site called "British Waterways Licence"/"Short term Visitor Licence" - have you checked that?

I've just phoned British Waterways, who are the Licensing Authority for our Inland Waterways - you apply to them for your Licence - on 01923-201-120 - spoke to a lady called Johanne - and been assured that if you buy a boat and it has all its correct paperwork (Safety Certificate, etc.) and you have the fee and a postal address for communication, then there is no problem about you buying a short term Licence (3 months, 6 months, whatever) irrespective of your Nationality.
I've met people from all over the World who own boats here and only use them during our Summer then fly back home Down Under or S.A., etc.
