Hardly any of the men and women in the medieval times could read. Why?

I also need this question The period between the 100's and the late 1200's was a time of great achievement. WHY?
I need these answered by thursday. HELP!

It is not quite true to say that hardly anyone could read during the medieval period. The upper classes could certainly read, and the children of the middle classes might go to school and learn. Even peasant children could acqurie an education in monasteries, about one peasant boy in ten became a clergyman, which required the ability to read Latin.

However, books had to be hand-written and consequently were very expensive, and so most people would not be able to afford to buy them. This made learning to read less important for many people, who would not be able to acquire books anyway.

The early middle ages was an era when people were developing new methods of agriculture, like crop rotation etc, swamps were drained and windmills and watermills were built. The towns were growing and developing, and trade was flourishing. By the 12th century silk and cotton were being manufactured in Europe. The 12th century saw the beginning of the period when Gothic architecture came to develop, producing fantastic cathedrals that are still the glory of Europe even today. Stained glass was developed in this period. There were impressive advances in military engineering Massive castles were built. The crossbow was invented. It was an age of bridge building, som bridges even supported houses and shops, like London Bridge for instance. There were improvements in boat building with the introduction of the rudder, the round-hulled cog and the compass.

In 'Cathedral, Forge and Waterwheel' Frances and Joseph Gies write:

'Of all the changes in the appearance and activities of western Europe by the end of the twelfth century - castles adn cathedrals, land clearance, swamp drainage, waterwheels and whindmills, hospitals and universities - the most impressive lay in the filed of commercne. Many more pack trains and wagons were on the road: many more round ships sailed northern and southern seas. Behind, commerc,e industry flourished, an industry that still fashioned articles one by one, by hand, but an industry vigorous, growing, and with potential for the future.'

nature has her ways.
we must adapt to her ways
her ways are beyond us
we must adapt to her ways
else we perish
