catamaran sailboats
What sailboat would you recommend?
I have been going to sailing camp for many years now and I consider myself a pretty good sailer. I can go in high winds and feel in control and I love hiking. Now that I am too old to go to the camp I want to continue sailing but I don't know what sailboat to get. I have experience sailing lasers, sunfish, sailfish, catamarans, and Corinthians. I want a sailboat that costs no more than $1000 (it can be used). I'm looking for either a small (1 or 2 person) boat or at most a 4 person one. I don't really know what kind of boats are out there so could you guys give me any recommendations? thanks
It's going to most likely have to be used to find one for $1000. If you're ready to take it to the next level, check out MC Scows, or C Scows. MCs can be 1 or two person, and a C scow is a two person. They are a blast to sail, and are raced all over the country. If you want something a bit smaller, 420 is a racing class sail boat (I raced one in the junior olympics) and that's a 2 person. Other than that, you're looking at sunfish or laser. Check out Craig's list, or maybe ask around and see if you can buy one from a friend or a friend of a friend. They can be pricy, but don't give up and you'll find a good boat? You might want to take the type of boat you're looking at for a test run before you buy it!

DIY Homemade Catamaran Sailboat You Will Love
does a catamaran or a trimaran have less of a tipping problem in big waves than single hull sailboats?

Catamarans and trimarans in general are much less likely to tip over than monohulls, but the reality is when dealing with larger, cruising vessels it's very rare that either gets completely turtled. In the rare event this happens, its true that it's nearly impossible to right a mulit-hull again and many monohulls may right themselves.
However, it is unfair to say from the above, that his means either monohulls or multihulls are more dangerous. Design is all important. There are many designs of both monohulls and multihulls that are routinely sailed safely across the world's oceans. On the other hand there examples of both which should never leave sight of land.
One should note, that while there are many examples of monohulls righting themselves, there are also many examples of them flooding and quickly sinking due to their balasted keels. Multi-hulls tend to weight much less and trap more air. Any large boat is likely to be damages to the point it can no longer sail if competely turtled.
One maker of catamarans, Catalac Catamarans has offered a reward to anyone who can document a hull coming completely out of the water, let alone capsizing. Over the past 30 years, the reward has never been claimed.
When comparing catamarans to trimarans, I think it is again misleading to talk in terms of boat type, but one must look at each individual boat. Many older catamarans and trimarans were home built and varied greatly in quality. Many of each are built with ocean cruising in mind, many of each are not. There are especially many small trimarans built for protected water racing.
In addition to boat type and boat design, what is also very important is the experience and competency of those on board. Proper closing of hatches, proper weighting of the boat and proper reefing and other actions of the captain and crew will affect a boats potential to capsize and flood.
If conditions are bad enough, such as the ones in "The Perfect Storm", most any vessel is in potential peril. One interesting thing I read in one of the sailing magazines, however, was that the sailboat (monohull) that was abandoned was later found, in one piece, still afloat.
