Buying a sailboat for Chesapeake Bay?

ok, I'm back.. Before I was exploring the idea of buying a powerboat to be used on Chesapeake Bay. Before I buy a boat I need decide if I want a power or sail boat. So I want to learn a little about sailboats and what kind of sailboat might fit both me and my situation.
Here is my mission statement.
1. I would be learning to sail in this boat.
2. I would mostly be sailing by myself.
3. In my wildest dreams the farthest that I could ever see myself sailing would be to visit a friend in Key West or maybe poke around the Caribbean.
4. probably need to set my upper price for a used boat somewhere near $20,000.
5. I am curious about the merits of tri-hull VS mono hull.
6. I have been on someone else's sailboat a few times on inland water, but not on saltwater.

So, do I sound crazy yet?

What you are thinking makes very good sense. Everything you mentioned is certainly much more realistic and attainable then you can possibly realize at this stage in your game plan. Sailing is very easy to learn.

In fact, I have been a full-time live a-board sailor now for nearly 20 years. (My how time flies when your having fun. . . ) And if you spend near $20,000 on a good used sailboat today - you will be able to buy a much better sailboat then mine. And mine has kept me safe & sailing for an average of 10,000 miles a year.

Re: tri-hulls & multi-hulls:
I love catamarans. I have one waiting for me back at the ranch - for when I can no longer safely sail long-distance. There is the 'downside' to multi-hulls. (and there really is only two that I have experienced). 1. some years ago, Marinas got wise and started charging double for these 'double-wide' multi-hulls. So whether you are sailing long distance or sticking close to home - these 18 to 23 feet wide babes cost a small fortune at the Marina. Where I pay an average of $40 a night or $400 a month for my 30 foot monohull. A 30 foot multi-hull will cost exactly double that these days in 'most' places (not all, but most). 2. A multi-hull is not the easiest vessel to manuever in and out of docks and marinas - mainly because there just isn't enough room. By far, most marinas simply are not designed with multi-hull wide vessels in mind (and this can be, and normally is, a real pain).

Sailing of course involves a 'boat load' of trade offs. We give up speed for unlimited free fuel (the wind) to get us where ever in the world we want to go. We also give up a lot of 'electrical' amenities and convieniences (electricity is an expensive primium on any sailboat) for running silent. In my opinion, nothing beats the silence of the waves slapping the hull as your liesurely sailing along at 8 or 9 knots. No loud engine(s) running.

BTW - Once you're sailed (and semi-mastered) Chesapeake Bay and/or Albemarle Sound - believe me - you can sail anywhere in the world with complete confidence. . .
