Is the catalina 36 a good sailboat?

I'm looking for my first sailboat and I was thinking to get a catalina 36
I was also planning on living aboard it. is it a good boat for live a boards and long distance sailing?

The Catalina 36 is a good boat. Maybe not the best 'first' boat - but certainly a good boat.

My strongest suggest (to anyone these days) looking to buy a live a-board sailboat is to 'totally forget looking at a particular brand name'. Chances are, doing this will cost you more, and it severely limits your selection of great boats, many of which are for sale at really great prices.

Getting "the most" boat for your money should be your goal - not the biggest, and not necessarily a brand name you are familiar with. For most, and even many experienced sailors; there are at least 50 great live a-board, seaworthy sailboats on the market they probably never heard of in their life.

While some may be very similar to the Catalina, many more will be quite different and many of them may suit your needs better. I suggest for awhile anyway, you forget 'Catalina' until you have climbed aboard a hundred or so sailboats in the 28 to 36 foot range - you will be amazed at what you find on, and in some of these vessels.

Also, if you are living a-board and cruising, you will need a good dinghy - believe me - even though a good dinghy will cost you upwards of $600 even on the used market (if you can find a good used one) it promises to be the single biggest money saving, time saving, walking saving, energy saving, convenience investment you can make for your boat. So easy 'on and off' access to your dinghy is a must.

The dinghy will allow you to anchor out and dinghy in for supplies etc. and avoid paying $40 - $50 for docking at Marinas - as most Marinas, City, County, State, waterside restaurants, State & National Parks have free 'dinghy docks.

Believe me, if indeed you are cruising & living a-board, a dinghy will save you some really big bucks as well as super extend your on the water, fishing and exploring opportunities. Furthermore, for example, on the ICW, there is a Walmart next to a shopping center with a dinghy dock. The nearest Marina is 6 miles away and the water depth does not allow you to take your sailboat to Walmart. Without a dinghy, you would be walking 12 miles - with a dinghy you can dock about 100 feet from the side of the store - and this is more the rule, then the exception.

I have been cruising on average, about 6,400 miles a year for the past 15 years - to keep your live a-a-board and cruising experience safe, comfortable, fun and exciting - you have a lot more to consider then a single brand name vessel. . .

My DH looks at sailboats for sale on CL every.single.day. We already have one, but he thinks we need a bigger one to live on permanently. YIKES!
I helped my son sell a large Technic Lego set, new in box, on CL. We met the guy at the public library, in the middle with other people around us.
We try selling things on the neighborhood trading post first, which is usually great since there are 500 homes in our hood.
PS. Kellie, couches never sell! Don't know why. I also tried giving a nice sofa and loveset to a couple who had no furniture and the guy said the couch wasn't long enough to lie down!
