Should i really have to wear a life jacket 100 % of the time?
My father makes Me wear a lifejacket whenever we are on our 26' cape dory sailboat. That includes when we are under power and on a calm day. I have literally been on sailboats all of my life, and we have had this one for at least 8 years. I have never fallen off of it. I have my boating license and all of the certifications relevant to anything I will be doing ever. I am always in the cockpit steering where there is absolutely no chance that I will fall out short of the boat sinking. Please realize that th e fastest that our boat can go is 6 mph. And that is with the wind at our back. Am I the only one who thinks this is not required? It is only legally required that any person up to 4 years of age wear a lifejacket at all.
I don't, and I don't make my kids wear one all the time either. There's times when the risk is greater - at night, in strong wind - when I'll wear one and a safety harness too, and other times in good weather, when there are several people on deck and there's no problem turning back to get someone fallen overboard (or pushed, as an emergency drill ...), I won't bother.
But it's your father, not mine, and you should at least listen to him. He may just be worried about anything happening to you. My dad would not take me across the English Channel though our boat was well capable, maybe because when he was younger he was caught in a storm off Spain and the boat's owner was swept overboard and drowned.
(newer PFDs such as Body Glove are a lot more comfortable than the old Mstang, btw)
