If it is a light weight dacron sail (under 8 oz cloth) a simple repair can be done by using rubber cement. Put a light, even coat of rubber cement on one side of the patch and once side of the patch, let dry until tacky. Apply the patch to the sail and burnish (rub with a hard object on a flat surface) to remove all the air bubbles. Over time the patch will discolor but will be as strong as the rest of the sail.
Cut the patch with a one inch margin as you mentioned.
It's not that easy to sew sailcloth with a domestic sewing machine, it's very easy to damage the needle bar or throw the machine out of time with even fairly light cloth.
