residents of fort lauderdale : beach access?
hi. i was just wondering how the public beach access is in and around fort lauderdale. is there one area that has better beach access than another? i lived on marco island on the west coast and our public beach access was horrible. but now we are moving to fort lauderdale and would kinda like to pick where to live depending on public beach access. so any info you have would be helpful. i know it's pretty busy over there. so do you have trouble parking? what's your favorite beach to go to?
The "beach" is actually a long, thin barrier island, separated from mainland Lauderdale by many bridges. The southern end, along Seabreeze Blvd, has some nice communities, and ocean access. Then there's Ft. Lauderdale Beach Blvd, near the intersection with Las Olas Blvd. This is the "action" area; spring-breakers, bars, clubs, beach activities--the most density. Then further north, it quiets down.
There are many nice areas to live along these roads; but, since you're on the beach itself, things are generally more expensive, including housing. You can opt to live just on the other side of the bridges, Near Los Olas Blvd, Broward Blvd, Sunrise Blvd, Oakland Park Blvd...all these are listed from south to north. The farther north, the less population density. In this area are some of the most lavish, expensive homes in south Florida, many with docks, large boats, yachts, famous, ultra-wealthy people; yet mixed in are apartment complexes, duplexes, townhomes, etc. that are affordable. Ocean access is readily available, with exceptions of the high-rises that dot the coastline further north. Still, in between them are plenty of public beaches.
Parking along the beach can be a hassle sometimes, as with all beaches; but generally speaking, folks find a space or use a parking facility. Overall, this area of SE Ft. Lauderdale is vibrant, interesting, many things to do and see. Quite a change from Marco Island. The thing to do is come and have a look around. Drive north on A1A, and you'll encounter many little beach areas, towns, each slightly different than the other. The further north you go, the less crowding, glitzy action. The entire length of beach is first-rate, white sand, the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean; a bit different than the Gulf Coast. I must admit I haven't been over to Marco Island in quite a while; and I know they had a lot of development; but still, it's much more subdued, laid back, than what you'll experience in Lauderdale.
