bowrider Boat Trailer
Is it better to have one newer vehicle, or two older ones? I need to tow a boat!?
Here's my situation. I'm wondering what makes the most financial sense.
I'm about to inherit a decent boat. (A 20' bowrider, with a good trailer). Problem is, I don't have a tow vehicle. Currently, I have a 9-year-old Nissan with 160,000 miles, but it's paid off, cheap to insure, reliable and runs really well. It's a 4-cylinder stickshift, and would simply be incapable of towing a boat.
So... do I get rid of the Nissan and buy a newer vehicle that's capable of towing the boat? (Say, a 4-year old midsize SUV?) Or do I keep the Nissan, and find an old pickup or SUV (for cheap) to pull it?
What makes the most financial sense?
We have the same issue, too. Fortunately, my fiance's parents have an SUV, and we've worked out a deal with them so that we can tow the boat using their vehicle, and we let them use our car(s). My fiance is trying to decide what to do - keep his car, or get a truck that will be just big enough to tow the boat. Gas prices and efficiency are the main issues. Since good sailing weather is limited in the North East, is it really worth it for us getting a truck at all? Perhaps, because a truck has other uses also, in addition to towing a boat...
My view is keep the cheap car, and get a cheap truck - which may be what we'll end up doing. Both of our cars are paid off, but one of them is on their last leg... Your situation may be different from ours, but the key is to weigh the pros and cons. One thing you may want to look into (if you do buy a used truck), is to insure it seasonally, or just 6 months out of the year. That way when the weather's bad, the truck can winter with the boat, and you can use the car as the main vehicle.
Docking your boat permanently somewhere may or may not be cost-effective, as you'll need to pay for the rented space, and there also may be fees for the location to put your boat in/ take your boat out of the water during inclement weather. It's worth looking into, but it may be about the same cost as payments for a second (used) vehicle.

It would be helpful to describe the boat & trailer a little more. For any potential boat-tow-ers they probably want to know if their truck can tow it. So, we talking 16′ aluminum skiff on a lightweight trailer? Or a 28′ cabin cruiser on a tandem-axle rig with brakes? Oh, and where’s the boat to be picked up, and where is it going. Most importantly, how much beer do you have?

Ah, but you do pay an additional set of taxes on the tires already–they call it a recycling tax. Ditto. In my case a guy with a boat trailer shifted into the bike lane to make a right turn. Someone at the gas station on the corner wrote down the license plate number. I gave the info to the cops but didn’t hear from them for weeks. When I contacted the cops, they said that the found the guy. He said that his friend stole the license plate, put it on his trailer, hit me, and then returned the license plate. So, like, it wasn’t him. And the friend was out of town.
