Calculus help: Rates of change?
A boat is pulled into a dock by a rope attached to the bow of the boat and passing through a pulley on the dock that is m higher than the bow of the boat. If the rope is pulled in at a rate of 1 m/s, how fast is the boat approaching the deck when it is 8m from the deck?
assume the distance from boat to dock is x and time t
please look at the diagram
now use
y = √(x²+m²)
since y is the length of the rope we know it's length is changed at the rate of 1 m/s
so we know that (dy/dt) = 1
we have this equation
y = √(x²+m²)
differentiate it in respect to x and simplify, we get
(dy/dx) = x/√(x²+m²)
how fast is the boat approaching the deck?
As boat approaches the deck x reduces along with it at the same speed
*So the rate of change of x is the speed of boat
speed of boat = (dx/dt)
===use chain rule to find (dx/dt) ===
(dx/dt) = (dx/dy) × (dy/dt)
(dx/dt) = [1/(dy/dx)] × (dy/dt)
(dx/dt) = [(dy/dt)/(dy/dx)]
we already know the right hand side of the equation(substitute them)
(dx/dt) = [1√(x²+m²)]/x
(dx/dt) = √(x²+m²)/x
****At last now we can answer the question. Now we have this equation. Substitute 8 for x you'l get the speed of boat at x=8

On a sailing ship, what is the "mizzen-chains" referring too?
I've been reading C.S. Forresters "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower", and among lots of other obscure naval references, he mentions the "bow-chains" on a few occasions, and the "main-chains" and "mizzen-chains" also. It is not the anchor cable! The context is when he is boarding ship or leaving ship into a smaller boat. One passage talks about him "scrambling awkwardly into the mizzen-chains and looking down at the cutter alongside" while the man in the boat can "only just reach up to the chains with his long boat-hook". When they get to the other ship "the main-chains of the brig were far lower than the mizzen chains" of the other "but this time he had to jump upwards" to reach them. Also, the two sailors that went before him are standing looking down at him, but it doesn't say whether it's the deck they're on. Anyway, it's not anywhere in the "glossary of nautical terms" on Wikipedia. Anyone have any idea what this term means?
I think these are the chainplates for the stays holding the mizzen mast. The wires supporting the smaller rear mast (mizzen mast) are attached to the boat with chainplates. I would imagine these could get quite large.

In the past in the uk some force would act as a brake when society started to go badly down hill, who will do that today?
the secularists? they are the problem driving this evil.
the christians? they are a mess, most of their churches are closing with empty pews, the catholics are all over the place due to their priests liking little boys too much.
who else? the only ones left to save this society and bring it back are the muslims, here we are in the top deck of the boat, the lower groups are drilling into the see and we will all go down with it together unless we stop them and change this society.
Hmm..I've been to South Africa several times and both trips involved beaches, fancy restaurants, sailing and some interactions with wildlife – not specifically a safari, but there were baboons, zebra, springbok, ostrich, and penguins dangerously close by. I can't say I had occasion to wear any special outfits like those in the Burda magazine. For one thing, it gets cold on the sail boat once you're in open water so I had to bring a warm sweatshirt and warmup pants to go over my shorts and T shirt. I also *had* to wear sneakers because the deck of the boat is slippery. And if the water is even slightly choppy, you get wet and then freeze your ass off.
As far as the safari goes – we were on bikes, because if you get near a baboon you have no choice but to RUN the other way. Bikes made for a faster getaway. I guess I might need a nice open back sheath to wear to the restaurants/department stores (which, incidentally, are ALL located in the same mall, WOW malls are the size of small towns in Cape Town).
So, as someone who has sort of lived a Burda life, I can assure you Burda is missing it completely.
