boats on ebay
is a house boat a suitable boat for Americas great loop?
i have just been interested as to whats out there and i found this SUPER cute small house boat and was just wondering if they are good boat for the loop or if you should go with a cabin cruiser or something.

and for a house boat like that was is the effect cruising speed and mpg and the perfect size motor that should be on it?

I'm sorry however, a pontoon boat simply won't make it. Remember, you have 160 miles of open Gulf to cross, plus the Great Lakes, and the Chesapeake Bay. Light weight aluminum framed pontoon boats that have no way to deflect a couple of tons of water over the bow just can't handle it. (I wish they could, but they can't.) I have seen a few head out on the Gulf and on Lake Erie, that came crippling back an hour later looking more like a trapezoid then a rectangle.
In addition, you have 3 main areas where distance between fuel stops is critical... one is a run of 250 miles from Hoppies near St. Louis to Green Turtle Bay in Kentucky. The next longest stretch is 135 miles on the Black Warrior River from Bobbies Fish Camp (mile 119) to Dog River on Mobile Bay, and then there is the 170 mile Gulf Crossing from Carrabelle to Tarpon Springs, but one can make an intermediate stop in Steinhatchee for fuel.
But all is not lost here... If this pontoon boat is in your price range, you should be able to find some really nice live aboard sailboat with a relatively shallow keel, (with a draft less then 4'.6" and a small auxiliary motor (either inboard or out). In fact, I met two young couples doing the loop in an old 50' sailboat with no rigging or masts. It had a small diesel and they said they only paid $5,000 for the boat - and what a nice set up they had...
