Where do i start looking for a house boat?

I'm looking for a piece of crap hunk of junk house boat that i can restore. i'd like one that was bigger...make 20+ feet. Just something that i can play with. i'm not looking to spend that much on it in case i don't enjoy my investment. Maybe something under 10-15K. Where should I start?

(i've already looked on ebay, boat trader, etc)

If you are willing to invest $10 to $15,000, and you are willing to do the work to restore one...
Why not start from scratch, and build your own? You will probably be amazed at how easy it really is.

I have enclosed two links for your consideration... One link (sandilee) show the detailed building of a houseboat with progress pictures. The other is the Glen-L boat-building design, whose "Mark Twain" houseboat plans were used to build the Sandilee.

Just thought you might be interested in knowing "all" your options.

Happy & Safe Boating,
John

Cheap Narrow/ House Boat?

I want to live on a narrow boat but have very limited funds so am planning to buy a shell/ unfinished project and carry out all of the renovations myself. I'm hoping that around £14,000 will be enough for the boat + renovations (obviously I will be raiding breakers yards and buying second hand parts etc!)

Any advice where I should start looking?
What boats should I avoid ( someone told me not to touch boats older that 20 years as they often require expensive hull repairs- is this true?)
Iv seen some cheap boats on ebay- how, without paying £600 for a survey, can I see/check if the boat is structurally sound?

Thanks

My parents bought theirs ("Doubloon") for £12,000 and sold it five years later having initially carried out what could accurately be described as a tidy up and minor refit. A 'recommissioning' really.

They had a survey and carried out the work advised - mainly a bit of add-on welding to the bottom (a couple of short lengths of sacrificial chine, one each side, amidships). My Dad and I attended at the survey and the surveyor was very happy to have us present and to point out everything as he noted it.

Among other bits and pieces I helped them with, I removed and reinstalled the engine - the engine compartment was filthy, as they so often are (no excuse) - with new mounts and coupling, to a freshly rust-treated and painted compartment. It was a 20hp Bukh - which are superb thoroughbred marine diesels - almost a bit over-the-top for a canal boat!

They lived aboard for over five years. Continually slow-cruising in the season and renting space in yards during the winter. They achieved their lifetime's retirement ambition. Cruising the length and breadth of the UK system in that time. Until my Mum became very ill and they had to sell up. By which time they had added a cratch-cover - a real bonus on any narrowboat particularly if living aboard.

They got nearly £18,000 for it! It was sold to a couple who worked in London and could not afford a land-based home in the Capital.

It was a fifty footer and was a perfect length. Veronica notes well (thumbs up) among other very good points, the compromise between operating cost and space: 40 to 50 ft is ideal for two, with enough space for occasional guests. Smaller for one is fine.

It all worked out very well. But it was not a matter of good luck or anything, just a good long patient search and lots of 'reading up' - subscribing to magazines like Waterways World and Canal & Riverboat. (Much easier, less costly and a lot less time-consuming than complicated projects, believe me!) The golden rules being: don't be rushed into buying the first thing that falls within your price range and don't plan for a 'project' when there are plenty of boats around that are more or less ready to go - but for a few tasks such as the above.

And don't forget that many boats that are for sale have 'existing' survey reports. And if good, the vendor will be only too happy for you to consult it. (In fact it is a tad suspicious if any half-reasonable boat doesn't as it begs the question: how is it insured? Which rather answers your question as to which ones to avoid!)

If so and the report is not too old and is favourable, then there you go! Probably the main thing to look for is the results of hull-thickness testing. But a good survey will cover just about everything. And as I already implied it's worth bearing in mind that the necessary insurance will be a problem without any recent survey at all.

Try and 'hold out' for the boat that meets all of your realistic specifications. (You don't need to have a survey done on every one you look at ... !)

A boat with an existing Boat Safety Certificate is a potentially huge 'plus' because it means that there will not be too much, if anything, involved in obtaining a renewal when it expires (three years in total, I believe it still is) apart from the cost of the safety survey of course. Which is sort of compulsory as you can't 'self-certificate'.

It is also absolutely essential for living aboard, however you do it (if not in any case in the UK at least!!) to get one with good thermal insulation to the hull sides and deck-heads, minimum. Or you will have awful condensation problems during the winter, not to mention heat loss. And get the engine compartment done too, if not already).

Very best of luck. It's a great idea.

[BTW 'Doubloon' was well over twenty years old when they bought her. She was originally built for a hire company fleet and I have old Hoseasons catalogues with her details in. But this was all documented too. Really, really old ones can be even better as they were built using iron - you can tell because they are riveted, as opposed to welded.]

Great looking shed! Will bear in mind your comments about buying sheds from eBay! ;-) OH currently watching boats on eBay – wants an Enterprise as our lovely Ruddy Duck (Seabird half-rater) won't be ready to go back in the water this year as she's having a major rebuild.
