Tipping Policy for dive instructors.?
I recently took my open water dive class. I paid about $400 by the time it was said and done for the class, the books, DVD, etc. I noticed on the boat, it said "Divemaster will work for food(crossed out) tips" Was I supposed to tip ON TOP of the class fee?...
Depends on where you are, and the local etiquette. Europeans--especially Brits (and I are one!)--generally only tip if they feel the service was exceptional, not on principle. From what I gather, tipping is an expected part of American everyday life. In Egypt, tipping (baksheesh) is normal, and the locals will expect it (if not demand it!)--although it's not obligatory.
I spent most of my instructional working life in the Red Sea, where salaries/commissions are pretty generous, at least in the bigger dive-centres, and even as a freelancer one can make a decent living if one is willing to put the work in. I was mostly teaching Europeans, thus did not expect tips from my students. I also worked one season in the Dominican Republic, where many of our guests were Americans, and so received tips far more often. The salary/commissions were much lower overall, however, so tips in hard currency were very useful.
The situation is very different for divemasters. 'Divemaster' is actually two grades BELOW 'Instructor'--although beginners often don't realise that (see Chapter 5 in your OWD manual!). Hence divemasters acting as guides on dive-boats are generally paid very much less than instructors, if at all. They might just be getting some free dives, or they might be paid on a per trip basis (rather than per client, or even per dive) so tips can be a vital supplement to--or the only source of--their income. Locals are also often paid less than Europeans (at least in the Red Sea), so the local divemasters especially will appreciate tips very much.
Especially in resort areas, dive-boat crew (which may include the divemasters) are quite often private contractors who are effectively providing a 'taxi-service' to the dive-centre's guests. As such, tips given at the dive-centre will not necessarily filter down to the crews, so it's better to tip them directly, if you're going to hand out tips.
If the divemaster was with you for your pool training, then he's almost certainly either being paid by the dive-centre/instructor, or is assisting on the course to gain experience preparatory to becoming an instructor himself. If you meet him for the first time on the boat, he may be a boat employee (or a freelancer) rather than a centre employee, and so should be tipped separately from the centre staff.
No-one will be offended if you ask what the situation is beforehand, if you're not sure.
In this case, though, it sounds like the sign was facetious, rather than mendicant, so I wouldn't worry too much about not having tipped (but if your conscience is pricking, then you can always double your tip next time you go out on that boat!).
