Sailboat old damaged headliners replacement?
i am in the process of purchasing a 1987 Beneteau 43 ft sailboat. The headliner is old and degraded in the aft cabin, head and forcabin. does this need to be replaced with a similar vinyl product, or can it be scrubbed disinfected (some surface mold) treated and painted with some type of marine product? What would be the compromises? Thanks for any expert advise or personal experience.
I've done each of your choices...with pretty good results. My own "Noah Count" overheads were probally in the same condition as yours; I scrubbed them well with some auto store cleaner and armoralled them and they look great. I had an old Starcraft cruiser that had the problem and I pulled 'em out and used the templates to cut luan underlayment panels which I varnished and screwed in....Really great. I also painted some for a customer once with a product called "awning paint" and that,too worked out fine. One thing you should do is try to make certain that there is no leaks causing the problem...look for patterns in the staining, darker spots, etc. The problem is most likely a result of damp air in a tightly closed space, but don't resort to cosmetics if there's a bigger problem!

No. The Beneteau is not built for that type of passage making. Certain types of boats such as Valiants, Pacific Seacraft, etc.. have different equipment, hulls, etc.. For example, the stern on a cruising boat is typically angular with a swim platform. However, this is a bad design for a following sea on an ocean voyage. Sailboats designed for passage making typically have rounded sterns/transoms.
Furthermore, if you are crossing an ocean in a smaller sailboat (i.e., < 50 feet) then you'll probably have a stern-mounted, wind controlled tiller that acts as an auto-pilot without drawing any electricity. That's hard to install on a cruising boat. The design distinctions go on and on...
In conclusion, it is not the size of the Beneteau that is the issue. It is the intended purpose of that boat. Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather cruise the British Virgin Islands in a Beneteau than a Valiant. However, ocean passages are serious business. They demand much more from the boat and the skipper.
