what type of motor can i put in my 1988 bayliner capri ?
just bought a 1988 Bayliner capri that has no engine. it originally had a 3.0 in board motor. i am trying to find out whether i can put in a 5.7 or at least a 4.3 aside from installing the motor and its parts i don't want to do any other modification to make one fit.
You can put in anny engine but...... the engine mounts are different. The 4 cyl has a different inner transom engine mounting plate than for a v6 and v8 engine beside that the 4 cyl has a front engine support and the v6 and v8 ts have side engine supports. So, without modifications it is not possible.
I rebuild a 78 Glastron from 140 4cyl to 225 v8 Ford and had lots of modifications to do to make it work, some $$$$ also. With a v6 or v8 you`ll also need a different out drive gear ratio compare to the 140 meaning you cannot use the out drive you have now without the proper gears or need a huge prop.
The easiest way is to find a complete drive line of your choice and rebuild the boat with the parts, in case the 4.3 or 5.7 You ll need: The engine with all the bolt onns, inner transom mounting plate, shift linkage bracket, exhausts, Y pipe and the proper geared out drive or upper house (Alpha one 1st gen or older) and fabricate custom side engine mount stringers and possible cut the deck as the exhaust elbows will probably rise through the deck on both sides.
Why not trying to find a complete Mercruiser 140, (3.0L) or a 120, (2.5L) or for some hp improvements a 170hp 470 (3.7L) engine, they show up on ebay and are drop in with less mods! Be sure that you have the exhaust J pipes for the 120 or 470 as these differ from the 140, lots of elbow grease and some 4fig$$$
