What brands of speedboats are good?
I want a little speedboat big enough for like, 6 people or so. I want a nice one, and not a used one. Does anybody know any brands or somewhere to start?
Before you decide on a boat you have to decide how it will be used. Will it be used for cruising/skiing or will it be used for fishing? Will it be used in an inland lake, the Great Lakes or the ocean? Will it be kept at a dock or will it be trailered?
If you are a serious fisherman you probably want an outboard because it gives you more interior room. If you are using the boat on the ocean you also want an outboard because it is easy (and important) to flush the salt water out of them. If you are going to trailer the boat a lot and economy is an issue you might want an outboard because they are lighter. An outboard also allows you greater flexibility in choosing the size motor you want.
The disadvantage of an outboard is that they are expensive, the two cycles use a lot of gas and the 4 cycles are heavy. They can also sometimes be tempermental although the new ones are better. If you buy an outboard stick with a name you recognize such as Mercury, Evenrude, Honda, Yamaha, etc. If they still make those miserable Chrysler/Force motors avoid them at all costs.
If you are a cruiser/skiier you probably want an inboard/outboard. You lose some interior space but you get more power and better economy for less money. They are also more framiliar for most people to work on because they are basically automotive motors. They are heavier which could be a factor for trailering. Don't buy one if you are using it on the ocean.
If you are using the boat on an inland lake a bowrider is a nice option because it gives you more interior room and seating. I don't recommend one for the Great Lakes or the ocean because it is to easy to take a wave over the bow and swamp the boat.
Another option is aluminum or fiberglass. An aluminum boat will be lighter and will give you better economy both while you are operating it and while it is being trailered. Fiberglass boats can be more exotic looking and tend to be a little less expensive.
If I were buying a boat to accommodate six people I would want one about 19 feet long. This could vary with where the boat will be used. On an inland lake a smaller boat might be fine. On the Great Lakes or the ocean the bigger the better.
As far as a brand is concerned there are a lot of very good manufacturers out there. The only brand I would definetly not recommend is Bayliner. I have had experience on older Bayliners where particle board was used. Unless thay have changed their ways dramatically I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole. Stick with major brands like Sea Ray, Pursuit, Crestliner, Boston Whaler, etc (this list is not intended to be exhaustive). The important thing is that there is a stable company standing behind the boat with a good dealer network.
What you do with a boat after you buy it is probably more important than you decision on what to buy. The biggest enemy of a boat is not water - it is the sun. The sun will cause paint and gelcoat to fade, upostery to fade and rot and plastic and rubber to deteriorate. If the boat won't be kept inside invenst in a good cover. The more of the boat it covers the better. Make sure it is braced adequately so rain water runs off and can't pool because the weight of water will cause it to tear. Keep the cover in good repair and replace it when necessary. The difference between a covered boat and an uncovered boat is like night and day.
The other important thing (other than the obvious mechanical maintenance) is to allow your boat to dry. Don't store wet things like life vests and lines under a cover. They will cause mold and mildew and if they sit on a wood floor they will contrubute to eventual rot. If your boat has carpeting over a wood floor (I prefer some other type of covering) allow the carpet to dry. Wet carpet on a wood floor is a perfect recipe for rot and it is a pain in the butt to replace a floor.

Camas leaders should consider a full ban on jet skis on Lacamas Lake. In my opinion, they are all noisy and some are dangerous as they veer ever so close to vulnerable skiers on the lake, in search of riding a bigger wake.
The council should also consider a partial ban on all motorized boats over 5 mph. This would allow for a far more peaceful and tranquil lake setting throughout much of the year. For example, how about just allowing ski boats on the lake only during the summer months of June, July and August?
Precedents have been set on most all other lake bodies of water in Clark County. Vancouver Lake, far bigger than Lacamas has an all out ban on any motorized boats. Battle Ground Lake also bans motor boats.
Lacamas Lake is just too small for big, noisy power boats.
