What does it mean when a boat has an horsepower of 90HP?
Is this good or bad? I am very new to boating and want to be able to understand its terminology!
Does 90HP indicate speed ?
its the amount of horsepower the motor has.
speed is always a tricky question in the world of boats.
your average boat is fiberglass V hull and 20-22 long, powered by a 300 hp or so v8. and it goes 45 mph, give or take a couple.
and 45 is about as fast as any boat that doesnt cost $100k or more goes.
however, fiberglass is far heavier then aluminum. and different hull designs change the amount of drag from the water.
get an aluminum boat of similiar size and design, it will be just as fast with less power.
get a flat bottomed alum boat, and it will literally fly without having much power.
my boat for example is a 16' alum flat bottom fishing boat. with the outboard included, it only weighs about 1,300 lbs, half of what your average boat weighs.
60 hp pushes it and a full boat worth of fishermen and gear to a top speed of about 40 mph. and that is with a 14" pitch prop and the motor running the idle just short of the red line top speed.
put a 15" or 16" pitch prop on it, remove about 500 lbs worth of people and gear, and i could easily hit 45 maybe even 50 mph with it.
depending on exactly what your boat is, and the condition of the motor (a tired motor aint gonna go full speed), your top speed could be anywhere from 15 to 50 mph.

Ken I am smiling with the report Tanya gave on rushing around from one station to the next! Glad your luggage all made it and all the flights were on time. Enjoy beautiful Salzburg! The weather has been mostly the same as it was here. We took the fishing boat and went to cruise on The Big Whiteshell yesterday just before another thunderstorm. Take care and enjoy.
