What is the best beginner Kayak?
I've never Kayaked before and I really don't want to break the bank for a kayak. I'll be doing most of my kayaking in the bay, so it shouldn't be that turbulent. Just looking for some answers from those with experience.
This question is asked on here almost every week. If you do a search on it you will find a lot of good responses. Bottom line is that there is no one "ideal" kayak for a beginner or for anyone at any skill level. That's like asking what is the "ideal" car for a new driver or an "ideal" shoe for an athlete. Among the factors that are important are your body size (you "wear" a kayak, you don't just sit in it) your athletic ability and the types of waters and lengths of trips you want to use it on. Many people make the error of buying a short, wide, heavy plastic "recreational" kayak and cheap aluminum and plastic paddle at a general sporting goods or discount store, only to find that it is terribly difficult to transport; slow, tiring and awkward to paddle and dangerously hard to steer and control, especially in windy conditions or if the waves get big. Thousands of these "bathtub boats" end up stashed in garages and yards or dumped on Craigslist by disillusioned owners.
Kayaking is a great deal of fun if you have the right boat and the right gear. Do yourself a favor and go to a dedicated kayak outfitter (not a general sporting goods store) and talk to the salespeople about what you want to do. Most will have starter classes and demo boats so you can get the feel for how different models work. They can also help you find a boat that fits your body, fitness level and intentions -- something that will guarantee a fun experience and that you won't outgrow as your skill level progresses. Expect to pay at least $800 to $1200 for everything you will need: kayak, PFD, good paddle (this is almost more important than the boat itself), sprayskirt, safety light, float bags, bilge pump and self -rescue gear.
Don't say "but I'm just going to paddle in the bay!" Any bay has tides, wakes from power boats, offshore winds, tides and other hazards. Properly outfitted and prepared you need not fear any of these. Going out without the right equipment and instruction could create a lifethreatening situation for yourself and for the people who would be obligated to rescue you.

They also have classified ads with hundreds of used boats for sale and gear comparisions and user reviews of hundreds of kayaks (though, bear in mind, few people complain about the boats they themselves have bought -- I have seen rave reviews on there of kayak models I have paddled and found to be horrible pieces of cr@p.)
And even if it turns out to be something you don't care to do that much, you can always get a good price for selling used quality equipment.

Buying a new or used boat
Which do you go for a new boat is all nice and shiny has a guarantee which is wait of your mind. But the costs are for more then buying a used a boat.
If you'd prefer to save some money and buy a boat whose value will not drop so sharply, then buying a used boat is the sensible choice to make. The rest of this article is devoted to tips on buying used boats.
If you buy a used boat from a private seller then there will be no guarantee so you will need to check it out first to avoid making costly mistakes. Buying from a dealer is another good way of buying a used boat, most dealerships offer a limited guarantee this will ad some peace of mind.
