How can I register a boat in CA without the original Bill of Sale?
I purchased an aluminum boat off Craigslist recently and was given an old registration belonging to an orginal owner but not the current seller. The seller signed a bill of sale to me but the boat was never under his name because he hard a time doing making the change. I need to register this boat as soon as possible. I am located in California, it's a 12ft aluminum boat with no motor. I need to register it through the CA DMV in order for me to have it out in the water this Spring but unfortunetly they "can't" help me or guide me how.
Sometimes a good deal turns bad because of the paperwork. You need to contact the "old" owner and have him give you his title, and a bill of sale. If he can't find it, he can get a duplicate from the DMV. If you can't find the old owner.....you should get your money back from the person you paid.
In most cases the DMV can guide you, what they can't do is find he old owner for you, or tell you where he is.
