What kind of paddle to get for my type of kayaking?
I just got a perception sport patriot angler 11' 8" kayak. I looked into what kind of paddles to get and what to look out for but it is hard to find actual feedback on paddles. Im going to be doing mostly lake fishing but also some river kayaking also. I am not looking to spend over $80 on a paddle because I do not need anything top of the line. Basically looking for some suggestions on brands and such. Also what kind of blade would be best? If it helps for recommending a specific paddle for me I am only 5' 7" but my kayak is 29" wide. I am guessing I am most likely going to have to get a paddle that might be a little long for me. I read the rule is if you can curl your fingertips around the end when it standing up next to you then its the right size but by that method I would end up with a paddle that would most likely bang on the sides of the kayak or force me to make an uncomfortable paddling movement. Extremely inexperienced so yeah, I am asking some basic questions here.
That "reach and grab" paddle sizing routine is not valid. As you correctly noted, it has more to do with the size of the kayak, particularly cockpit width and height above the water. I'm 2" shorter than you and have paddled wider boats on occasion (most of my own fleet of kayaks is less than 24"). My best guess is that you will need a 240 cm, possibly even a 250 cm. The best way to test this would be to take your kayak to a lake or river somewhere that has a kayak rental concession and rent a couple of sizes of paddles to test.
Your budget is a little low to get a decent new paddle. The main factor that determines a crappy paddle from a good one is having a fiberglass shaft. You don't want aluminum (unless you are doing serious whitewater). Aluminum is heavy and stiff and will tire you quickly. After all, the paddle and you are the "engine" of the kayak and you want that component to be the most comfortable and efficient you can afford -- the paddle is so important I would rather use a great paddle with a crappy kayak than a crappy paddle with a great kayak. That said, unless you can find a good mark-down deal or sale on a good paddle for $80, you are going to need to add $20 to $30 to that budget to get a decent Aquabound or Bending Branches. Werner paddles are kind of the gold standard but one of those will run you $150 and up. It may sound counter intuitive but don't go for the largest spoon size if you are looking at a bunch of paddles. Many novices think a larger paddle will be easier and give them more power and speed but that is not really true. A narrower longer spoon will allow you to place the blade closer to the hull, paddle with a higher cadence (which is less tiring) and you will have less chance of arm and shoulder injuries. The more tapered blades catch the wind less, too, a factor many newbies fail to understand.

Anyway, I think you get the picture of what to look for. YOu can sometimes find deals on Craigslist or Ebay, though shipping can run around $20 to $30.
Spending a little more on a really good paddle is the best investment you can make in your paddling enjoyment and performance. Most people trade up or around on their kayaks over the years, but a good paddle will stay with you through a variety of boats.
PS - Thanks, Mike, for catching my booboo over at the other question on kayaks (I mixed up Perception and Dagger as far as not making whitewater boats). I used to sell both brands many years ago at an outfitter. Perception still makes decent recreational and light touring kayaks, like the one you bought. And you are right, it is not a whitewater boat, though with a good tight spray skirt you could probably take it in fairly open short runs of Class I or mild Class II. I have taken similar models on such runs.
