aluminum boat sale
Yamaha 30 hp outboard without original cowling (engine box)? Is that a deal breaker?
For the fishing boat experts. I found a good aluminum boat for a decent price (2500$) in Ontario. It has a Yamaha outboard 30 hp 2 stroke engine (maybe 1992). One worrisome spot is that the motor case (cowling, whatever they call it) has no Yamaha brand colors on it. Like it is either painted or exchanged with a generic one. I am pretty sure it is a 30hp Yamaha. What would this generally mean if the cowling is missing or painted? Should I just walk away? Or should I look at the motor itself and not overthink the cowling issue.

A 1992 Yamaha 30 EL in excellent condition is worth $500 tops. The one you are looking at is not in excellent condition. Unless this package comes with a trailer, it's not worth $2500, maybe $1600-1800 without the trailer.
Sounds like a do-it-yourselfer has painted the cowl to hide some ugliness. If you do buy this, you can get the correct paint and decals from Yamaha, about $75.
If function is more important than beauty, keep in mind that the outboard is more than 20 years old, and look at these points before purchase:
-Do a compression test- all cylinders should be above 110 psi, and be within 10% of each other.
-Check all rubber parts for sins of deterioration- fuel lines, engine mounts, cowling seals, etc.
-Check all wiring for signs of cracked insulation, especially stator and ignition module wiring.
-Make sure the outboard swivels and tilts smoothly and easily. Look for signs of sloppiness at the pivot shaft, the part that the outboard turns on.
-Remove the gear case drain screw and check for water. Any water present will drain out first. If there is any water, walk away.
-Take a look at the overall condition of the boat and outboard. Does it look to be well maintained? Is it clean? Are there service records?
-Water test the boat and outboard. Are there any leaks in the hull? Do all the Accessories (lights, horn, live well, etc) work? Does the outboard start easily and idle smoothly? Does the outboard run consistently, without any stutters, at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full throttle?
-Take a person with you to inspect the boat who is knowledgeable about boats and follow their advice.
Keep in mind that new boat sales rose sharply last year (10% increase in USA, 14% in Canada). This translates to an increase in the number of used boats for sale, so be patient, and look around. You've got time, Pickerel season isn't for another month.
