how old and how much is it to go scuba diving?
how old and how much is it to go scuba diving? how much for the lessons and then for the permit? and where am i able to get a tank? and how much are those and the air in them? and where am i able to get lessons? what would i need to go scuba diving and the cost of that?
HOW OLD? You can start at age 10 for your Junior Open water certification. You're considered a Junior until you reach age 15 and then after that as an adult and will automatically become an adult Open Water diver. If you're 15 years old up to the age of majority ( the time when the law considers you to be an adult) in your country, you will probably be required to have a parent sign a consent form.
HOW MUCH? It can vary from area to area. Expect the course to be 200-300 bucks. That will include your course materials, class time, pool dives and your check out dives in open water. It may or may not include the use of the shop's gear. Read the fine print as you may have additional expenses renting their gear.
To start the course, most shops will insist you have your basic personal gear. This will be mask, snorkel and fins. Buy the best you can afford that fits you properly. Expect this to cost between 150 to 300 bucks.
WHERE TO GET A TANK? At a dive shop. All of them have them for sale or rental. The most common tank is the 80 cubic foot aluminum. They run about 180-200 bucks new. An air fill costs anywhere from 5-10 bucks as a rule.
LESSONS? At a dive shop that has Instructors. There are numerous dive agencies out there and shops that go with them. PADI, NAUI, SSI are the popular agencies. You can look these up on the internet and each agency has a dive shop locater tool on their site. Just input where you live and it'll pump out the local shops nearest you and what they offer.
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
The following is a break down of the basics you need to dive apart from the mask, snorkel,fins and tank already mentioned. A lot of this stuff can be rented. You don't have to go out and buy it all at once. It takes time to assemble your gear set and trying out many different manufacturers and models of gear before purchase is a good idea.
Tanks, you'll want two of them. If you're out on a local dive charter boat, most trips are two tank dives and is a good reason to buy two. 200 bucks a pop. If your diving will be all holiday dives that you travel by air to, no need to buy tanks. You can't take them on airplanes. You rent at your destination or the tank(s) and fill(s) are usually included in your dive package.
Exposure protection: You'll need a suit that is appropriate for the temperature of water you'll dive most often. That could be a 3mm shortie for tropical waters costing 150 bucks or all the way up to a crushed neoprene dry suit with hood and gloves that may set you back 2400 bucks for cold water diving. In between there are 5-7mm wet suits and semi dry wetsuits. 400-750 bucks. Hood 40 bucks. Gloves 40 bucks.
Regulator set: If you're mostly diving cold water, you'll want environmentally sealed regs no matter the manufacturer. It's a must. You'll be paying extra for this. On average, entry level reg sets that include basic console and both your Primary second stage as well as the Octo run 450 bucks and up. Add in a dive computer on that console and the price doubles.
Buoyancy Compensator: 400 bucks to 2 grand.
Lead weight. Average cost is about 40-50 bucks. Much more if your BC is weight integrated and requires specialized lead pouches.
Dive computer. Not a fancy toy anymore and is something I consider a must have. 400 bucks and up.
Dive knife or shears. Getting caught in nets, fishing line or electrical cable isn't good. You'll need these to self rescue.They are not weapons. There's nothing down there for you to stab. Your choice which you buy. You may get one of each or two knives, one that goes on your BC as a back up and your primary knife which is strapped to your leg. 40 bucks and up.
Personal dive marker. This lets boaters know where you are so your head doesn't get taken off. 50 bucks and up.
Dive lights. You may actually need this on occasion even in daylight to explore under rocks and crannies. If you plan on doing night dives and are certified for it with a specialty course you'll need two. You'll also need two if you take the wreck diver course or cavern diver. A primary light and a back up light if the primary fails. Back up lights go for 50 bucks and up. Primary lights start at about 130 bucks.
Wreck reel. This is a spool of line. You'll want one if you're eventually certified as a wreck or cavern diver. You'll also want one if you use a personal dive marker to tie that marker to. 50 bucks and up.
A "save a dive kit". This is just a box containing basic repair parts, like mask and fin straps, nylon zip ties, tank O rings etc. You can put together your own kit or buy a pre packaged one. Cost for a pre packaged one starts at about 30 bucks.
Dive gear bag. A hockey bag will do in a pinch but there are specialized bags you can buy made for dive gear. Getting one with wheels is a bonus. 50 bucks and up. An Armor wheeled bag ( a manufacturer of good quality dive gear bags and dive luggage starts at 200 bucks. While you're at it, get a reg bag too to protect that reg set during travel. 40 bucks and up.
That's a basic gear set suitable for most recreational dives. You'll be prepared for just about everything with that. There's a lot more small items, like tank bangers, tank strobes, cameras, goodie bags etc that you can pick up later as the need arises or just to indulge yourself with new toys.
