what is the cheapest trailer brand?
I would like to buy a trailer something from 24ft up, but I'm confused about the models. I wanna save some money to buy a house and I'm going to live in a campground for a year. Which is the cheapest brand name-model I can find? Any suggestions? No I dont want a used one.
I'm talking about an RV-trailer, not a trailer to carry goods or boats or ATVs.
First off there are a few things to consider. What is the gross weight rating you will require? This can make a significant difference in price. To determine this you will need to know the weight of the boat, with a full load of fuel, water, and any gear that you may have on board when transporting. Take this figure and add 15 to 20% as a minimum. Do not say, well I only need to cover the weight of the boat, it does not happen that way! Add to that figure, the weight of the trailer and you have a fair minimum GWR for your new trailer. Round it up, not down, to the nearest thousand pounds.
Next, WHY WOULD YOU WANT THE CHEAPEST TRAILER YOU CAN GET?? I would be much happier with a quality trailer that suits my needs, be it new or used.
Also you must take into account how and where you are going to use the trailer. Painted steel is going to be you lowest cost option. However if you use the boat in saltwater or even live in a coastal environment, I would not recommend a painted steel trailer. Galvanized steel will increase the cost by at least 10% but would be money well spent if you are near saltwater. Add another 10 to 15% over the cost of a galvanized trailer and you can go with aluminum and pretty much forget about corrosion of the frame.
Brakes are required on a trailer of this size and the lower cost system is surge brakes with basic drum brakes on one axle. You can upgrade to disk brakes for an additional fee. Electric brakes are also an option but there are mixed reviews on these as water and electricity do not go well together. Also if your truck is not equipped for electric trailer brakes there is additional costs there as well.
You will also likely have to include the optional charge for a SPARE TIRE and suitable carrier on a new trailer. Do not go with out this. To me, this is not an option, it is required equipment.
All that being said, I checked the NADA value on a painted steel 2006 trailer, 25' model with surge brakes, with spare tire and carrier, and came up with a high book used value of $5,300.00. You can certainly find a new trailer from a quality manufacturer for not much more than that, maybe less. For reference, one of my boats is sitting on a 2005 aluminum trailer, 3 axle with disc brakes on 2 axles. The trailer has a GWR of 13,800 lbs and sold new for about $7,500.00. The trailer was manufactured by Performance Trailers in Naples, Florida. I love this trailer and would recommend them if you are anywhere close.
Please do not cut corners when it come to your trailer. Your life, that of your family and friends, and everyone else on the road is counting on you. Boating is not cheap and trying to take the cheap fix now will end up costing more in the long run!
