aluminum boat pictures
how can i find out the age or year range for certain Penn Senator reels?
for example, my 14/0 with the aluminum spool and maroon handle.
it has the picture of the sailfish and the fisherman on the boat on the side.
i couldnt find out on a search, but i read that telling by the handle color may be a myth
i have other senators, but this is certainly the oldest
The handle color means nothing. When I was using Penn reels in the 1970s (I've since switched to other brands) the handle color was how my brother and I told our Jigmasters apart. I had reels with red, green, and white handles (and maybe other colors), all from the 1970s.
Anyway, Penn started shipping reels with aluminum spools in the mid 1980s (before then you were stuck with heavy plated steel or brass, or flimsy plastic, or you got an aftermarket aluminum spool from Newell). At that time they also began making reels with solid front and back panels (before then they all used metal posts) and added faster gears, calling them things like "HL" (for High speed, Light weight). But other than that, Penns have changed very little -- I can still get parts for my 1970's Jigmasters and my 1980's Senators. (I recall I got my 113 4/0 before the 1983 El Nino, and it came with a heavy solid metal spool, so I had to buy a Newell spool for it so I could cast it. I got my 114HL 6/0 a few years later, and it came with an aluminum spool.)
So the aluminum spool on your reel would place it no earlier than about 1985, though it could be an older reel with a newer spool.
(Is your reel really a 117 14/0? Those things are huge! I don't think they still make them. And I'm surprised it was made with an aluminum spool -- those are made for casting, and no normal person could cast a reel that big -- it's hard enough with a 6/0.)

Use lots of glue.
I first read it as, “mid conversation, fisting with my brother in an aluminum boat..”
Pound it into a bowl shape with a bowling ball or a shot put. Make sure that the amount of water that it would take to fill it up weighs more than it does. Then it will float on water when it's empty.
Weight of water displaced = Weight of aluminum boat
Water is 1,000 kg/m^3 or 1g/cm^3
