What outdrive fits on a chevy 350?
I just got a boat with a Chevy 350 and it has an omc 215hp outdrive on it. I hear those outdrives are impossible to replace or fix due to the fact they don't make them anymore. I want to replace it now before I have an issue. What outdrive will work with my engine?
It's a bit more tricky than just what drive can be used. Your description leads me to think that you have an OMC "stringer" drive.... the drive is painted white, and has a very large rubber transom boot around the outside of the drive. You might have a OMC Cobra Engine/Drive Painted a dark gray..........
The transom cut-out for the OMC Stringer unit is to large to fit either the Cobra, Volvo, or Mercruiser transom shields over. Thus it will require extensive transom rebuilding, or the use of an Aluminum transom plate.
If you have a Cobra drive now, OMC Cobra drives are available, and the cut-out is the same as Mercruiser.
Each manufacturer has different gear ratios, and methods of connecting the drive to the engine, so it's more than just bolting the drive to the bell-housing.
Bottom line, with used boat prices at all time lows, I'd look to sell what you have and get something newer, with a Mercruiser or Volvo drive.
