aluminum boat makers
boat coating question?
will that spray bed liner for trucks stick to the bottom of a aluminum boat? if i scruff it up with a wire brush will it adhere to it? in paticular the rustoleum coating cuz its cheaper than most . fixing up a older 14 footer and want to have the bottom good for small bumps here and there while in the water. thanks for any info
Yes if it is keyed well it will stick ok.
In the long term it will potentially cause more issues than it solves - but for a quick fix it might get you out of trouble. It cannot correct lost rivets or splits - they are structural defects and must be fixed first.
The cheaper any coating the less stuff there is in it - so the less you pay the less you get, simple as that.
Few coatings of this type will stick to the bare aluminium, regardless of how well you scratch it. A suitable etch primer is needed to bond for certain, and often a boundary layer between that primer and the top coat. The product you choose will dictate the process - stick to the system unless you want problems, there is no warranty if you deviate from the maker's recommendations.
Natural aluminium oxidises and forms a self healing stable surface that resists further corrosion. Sealing the surface requires that it be made perfectly clean first, or the impurities trapped under whatever seals the surface can promote crevice corrosion which continues unchecked as no oxidisation occurs to stabilise the material, thus you can have big holes before you know it.
