aluminum boat floor
1648 War Eagle Duck Hunting Boat. Prop Question.?
I have a War Eagle 1648, added small (short) live well, a "floor". The 4 stroke, 40 hp, Yamaha motor seems to do good out of the hole, and up on plane fast. I don't have power tilt and trim, it has a gas shock so the motor will kick up during log jumping and hitting stumps (where I live, it is common to hit 3 or 4 a trip) so no trimming is possible while up at speed. The aluminum props don't last one trip because of the underwater brush and limbs traveling through the timber. What degree prop comes on my boat, and what degree should I put on there to gain speed? Should I go up on degree or down? I just received a 12 for Christmas, but would 13 or 14 be better? (Without checking the rpm's). By ear the motor has no problems, whether I'm alone or with 2 passengers and gear.
It's almost impossible to properly prop a boat without a tach.With a light load,at wot, you want to be running very close to the maximum rpm(5,000-6,000 for your engine). Over rev control kicks in @ 6,200. On an aluminum duck boat you can get by with more pitch(in inches not degrees) because of the light weight and flat(or near flat) bottom that lets the boat "ski" on top of the water. 14" sounds about right as long as you have a good hole shot. You might check with a yamaha dealer to see if they still offer an hour meter/tach combo that is self powered and mounts to the powerhead. I think that they still offer them and the hour meter is good to have for maintenance,and they are very simple to hook up. I sold them for about $45.

Three teenage boys who spent 50 days adrift in a tiny boat in the South Pacific walked ashore on shaky legs Friday after their chance rescue — celebrated on their home island hundreds of miles (kilometres) away as a miracle that brought them back from the dead.
The trio — Samuel Pelesa and Filo Filo, both 15, and Edward Nasau, 14 — told rescuers they survived on rainwater they collected, a handful of coconuts, raw fish and a seagull that landed on their 12-foot- (3.5-meter-) long aluminum boat.
The boys set off Oct. 5 from their home island to one nearby. It's not known how they went missing, but the outboard motor may have broken down at sea.
Worried family members reported them missing and the New Zealand air force launched a sea search. No sign of the tiny boat was found, and the village of 500 people held memorial services, expecting never to see the boys again.
Foil will tend to hold moisture better than paper, but it also will cook your product faster.
Build a flat bottom frame with the popsicle sticks and toothpicks. Wrap the hull in aluminum foil and seal the edges with glue and candle wax.
You need to displace more than 300 cc of water plus the weight of the boat just to stay afloat. That assumes that the load is perfectly balanced in the boat.
At home you can use 300 dry roasted peanuts or 300 raisins when you try out your boat in the sink or bathtub.
