How fast will a 50 H.P. boat motor go on a 14 foot aluminum john boat?
WITH 400 POUNDS OF WEIGHT ON THE BOAT.
MUCH faster then the trolling motor your thinking of, assuming the fact its more power then that vessel is meant for does not cause a disaster, or the weight of the motor doesnt just sink the boat (2011 50 hp mercury weighs 247 lbs, just one pound less then 2011 60 hp i ordered today for my 16' hull)
exceeding rating plates in either weight or power is a risky move. doing both at the same time multiplies your risk.
even just a 20hp motor will push a little 14' john more then fast enough. and costs a fraction of the price.
i will say if your considering buying an outboard, it is becoming the time for deals. the 2011 are coming out and 2010s are still around, winter means many boaters are parked for a few months, shops are looking for work and dealers are working to get anything sold.
the 60 hp merc i ordered is apperently overstocked currently and going for LESS then teh 50 hp merc. i was gonna buy a 50 instead, but since my hull can hold a 60 max and its cheaper right now then the 50.....
