alumacraft boats
power rating for a boat?
I have a 16ft alumacraft jon boat with a 50hp mercury 500 on it. The boats transom is rated for 40hp max. Is this ok, i have run the boat many times has done good so far, and is really fast.
The rating plate is more a general suggestion than actual law. Tell your insurance agent about it -- they might not care, but not telling 'em up front might result in a denied claim down the road. And most bass tournaments will disqualify you if they find out you're overpowered.
The hp rating is based on length of the boat, width & height of the transom, and type of controls.
If you have helm steering and a 20-inch (minimum) transom height, then your max HP is boat length times transom width (in feet), times 2, minus 90, rounded up to the next multiple of 5.
So if your 16' foot boat is 4' wide: 16 x 4 = 64 x 2 = 128 - 90 = 38, which rounds up to 40.
If you have tiller steering or less than 20-inch transom, it's length x width x 0.8 minus 25.
So if your 16' foot boat is 5' wide, it would be 16 x 5 = 80 x 0.8 = 64 - 25 = 39, which rounds up to 40.
With tiller steering you can make sharper turns, so the boat is rated lower.
A manufacturer can place a higher rating on the boat if they demonstrate that it can safely handle the extra power, or they can go lower if they choose.
A manufacturer might use a lower rating if their transom won't stand up to the next higher, but I would have complete confidence in alumacraft.
Any transom that'll handle a 40hp will certainly hold a 50.
25% is quite a bit more horsepower, maintain an awareness that you're overpowered, and don't let your brother-in-law borrow it.
