Would it be safe to sail a planing hull on the ocean?
I have a 14' Alcort Sunfish as well as a 16' Laser. Both are planing hulls. I am going to the beach with my family in a few weeks and am considering taking one of the sailboats. Would it be safe to sail one of them in the ocean, given that we probably would not be going out more than a mile?
Hey Josh, the short answer is yes, but it really comes down to your sailing abilities. I've been sailing our sunfish for over 40 years now, and have since moved into a 23 foot Com-Pac sloop. We sail mainly on Lake Michigan, which is known for gales, high winds in the fall, and waves that can break freighters in half. The only problem I've had with the sunfish is beaching it safely in challenging conditions. What works best is turning into the wind in waist deep water while the centerboard is still in, then jumping out and taking the beast by the horn. As soon as you pull that board near shore, any turns only affect your boats heading, not its course. It generally goes sideways up on the beach under the power of the wind and the waves until it grounds out and turns over sideways, dropping the rigging on anyone in range laying on the shore. Best to drop the laundry and pull the boards 30 or so feet from shore then walk it in.
The sunfish will work fine on the ocean, as well as it does in land in the same wind and waves. On Lake Michigan, we've frequently been out in 4 to 6 foot waves that wash right over the deck. You can never keep the cockpit scuppered out, just leave the drain open the whole time, and consider leaving the plug ashore so you don't lose it, you'll just have to learn to live with 6 inches or so of water in the well all day, if there is good wind, she'll still run fine over the waves and through the white caps, it's a blast!
My only word of caution is when you get it back on the trailer or on shore for the night, get a hose and clean it off really good. In particular, the spring mechanisims on the rudder, and all the rigging, any metal hardware, like stainless rub rails and rivets, and the entire hull. That salt water will damage something that you won't want to be replacing in a year, and if you wait until you see the white crud after it dries, it's too late to save anything. If you keep it on a trailer for the night, and dunk the trailer launching it, just run the entire boat and trailer through a coin operated car wash on the way home, that is probably the best way to preserve your investment. Don't worry about the winds or waves, if it gets too strong, the boat will simply tip over before any damage is done, only your ego will be bruised. Have a blast, and take care, Rudydoo
