37 sailboats
bottom painting sailboat?
I am having my 37 ft sailboat put on the hard this spring, and it will be my first spring with the boat. I plan to bottom paint it, can someone tell me the steps and tools needed and approx how long it will take from start to finish with two people working on it.
Also, any recommendations of long lasting bottom paints? I will have it in the chesapeake one season then am taking it to the caribbean for two years and want it to last as long as possible.

It' a been there.....done that kind of thing. My friend and I bottom painted his 37 Tartan last September. We did discussed the job several times over the summer. The choice of the right bottom paint was the biggest issue. The boat had been pressure washed in May, and we knew there was scum but no barnacles then, so we where pretty sure we could pressure wash then paint. But we where prepared to sand if necessary. We decided to go with Trinidad bottom paint, but a couple weeks before we did the job, we went to West Marine to pick up the paint.......we knew we wanted to put two coats on and thought 2 gal. would be enough. OOPs! They only had one gallon in stock, and it was the wrong color. The staff had two gallons of Ultra in the right color, that just happened to be on sale. Bottom line for a savings of over $200 it was a no brainier. We picked up rollers, paint pans, a couple brushes. masking tape, and some solvent for clean up.
If you paint the boat or sand the bottom, keep in mind the paint contains toxins that you must respect. A bio hazard suit is good, paint mask and gloves a must, but a couple pair of safety goggles is an absolute must.
We scheduled an early haul out so we could get the first coat on before noon.....You can recoat in 3-4 hours, but you need to let this coating dry for 8-12 hours after the final coat is applied. So we started painting about 9:30 after the pressure wash and marina blocking the boat. With both of us painting, we had the first coat on by 12:30 ish. We resumed painting at 3:30 and barely got done be 5:00.
As it turned out the marina couldn't launch till after noot the next day, And we could do the parts of the swing keel, we couldn't get to before.
Lessons learned. It's a lot of work.......We did an acceptable job. We could have hauled out, and painted the swing keel, in the afternoon on the first day, and put the second coat on the next morning. With drying time it was a two day job regardless.......and launched at the end of the day.
We are both in the Inter Harbor in Baltimore.........a recent inspection shows a little scum........we will haul and pressure wash in April. I'm pretty sure we'd get at least 2 years on this paint.
